Makeup for what? Just to get all over my PPE…
In many female-dominated workplaces, the pressure to wear makeup is often overlooked but pervasive. This expectation is rooted in traditional gender norms and, as highlighted, can reflect underlying misogyny that dictates how women should appear to be deemed "professional." It's critical to acknowledge that these standards are not based on actual job performance but rather on appearance biases imposed mainly by male-dominated ideas of professionalism. Many women find themselves forced to choose between comfort, particularly when dealing with PPE at work, and conforming to these superficial expectations. Wearing makeup under masks and protective gear can be uncomfortable and impractical, yet the pressure persists to maintain a certain look to satisfy these outdated professional norms. Rejecting these norms is an act of empowerment. Embracing authenticity means women can focus on their skills, efficiency, and expertise rather than superficial appearances. Progressive workplaces are now beginning to challenge these beauty standards by emphasizing inclusivity and focusing on merit and capability. This shift not only benefits individual women but also fosters a healthier, more equitable work environment where all employees can thrive without unnecessary and unfair appearance-based judgments. Recognizing and confronting the misogynistic roots of makeup expectations is a step forward in creating truly professional and respectful work cultures.
