... Read moreOkay, so you've seen my wild journey with photoshopped holiday cards, and trust me, it's been a blast! But what if Photoshop isn't your jam, or you're looking for other ways to make your 'holidays images' really stand out? I've learned a lot over the past decade about making memorable cards, and it's not always about complex editing. It's about creativity and a touch of humor! First off, think about a unique theme. My cards have ranged from a quirky 'fishing trip' with waders and rods, complete with a giant fish, to a cozy 'hot tub' scene, and even an adventurous 'ski lift' moment. The OCR details from my photos show how diverse these themes can get – there was even a year we went full '90s tracksuit' chic in front of a waterfall! Don't be afraid to think outside the traditional studio portrait. What's a funny inside joke your family has? What's a dream vacation you'd love to take (like my 'I ❤️ JAPAN' sweatshirts at a temple gate)? These personal touches make for the best ideas. If you're not into the intense photoshopping, you can still achieve a similar 'weird family' vibe with simpler methods. Consider using props and costumes! For example, a simple 'pajama party' theme, like the one where we were all in red and white stripes, can be incredibly charming and easy to set up at home. Or, for a more outdoor adventure, grab some denim jackets and pose against a natural backdrop, just like my card where we were leaning against a tree on the grass. The key is commitment to the character – whether it's just you playing all the parts, or your actual family getting into the spirit! Another tip: embrace humor! My goal every year is to make people laugh. Whether it's exaggerated expressions on a water ride, a playful interaction with deer in a park, or just a slightly absurd scenario, humor instantly makes your card memorable. The joy isn't just in receiving a beautiful card, but in getting a good chuckle. Think about incorporating funny poses or an unexpected setting that will bring a smile to everyone's face. Don't forget about location! While I often use green screens or clever photography, you can also utilize interesting local spots. A beautiful natural background, a historical landmark, or even your own decorated home can provide a fantastic canvas for your holiday images. The card featuring us in front of a castle, and another with a wooden background and pine needles, shows how much difference a backdrop can make. Finally, don't overthink perfection. Some of my favorite cards came from spontaneous ideas or slight mishaps. The fun is in the process and the story behind it. The most important thing is to capture the spirit of the holidays in a way that truly represents you and your loved ones. So, whether you're recreating famous scenes, embarking on a 'virtual vacation' like my Japan-themed card, or just having a silly moment at home, focus on capturing the spirit of the holidays in a way that truly represents you. Your friends and family will cherish the unique effort. Happy snapping!
