This video gutted my IG engagement
Fun fact this silly video from January 11th blew up on IG and I got over 1 million views on it!
Too bad it also KILLED my engagement on my page as a whole 😭 I was doing rather okay follower to likes/comments ratio but this video randomly blew up and now my IG is back on that standstill of it’s not really on anyone’s fyp and it’s in limbo.
Numbers shouldn’t mean anything in the slightest but it feels off when I apparently have 8k followers but some of my post barely reach over 100 likes 😭 it makes it look like i bought followers which isn’t true. The hard price is that I can’t rely on IG I have to spread myself out more and it looks like I’m gonna be cross posting anywhere I can at this point #jackinthebox #throwbackthursday #jackintheboxfanart
I totally resonate with the experience of having a video unexpectedly blow up, only to see your overall Instagram engagement take a hit afterward. It's truly disheartening when you put so much effort into your content, and a single viral moment seems to derail everything. Many creators, myself included, have faced this puzzling phenomenon on social media platforms. One of the main reasons this happens often comes down to how the Instagram algorithm works. When a piece of content, like a viral video, suddenly performs exceptionally well, the algorithm pushes it to a very broad audience. This audience might not be your target demographic at all. They might engage with that one specific video because it's funny, shocking, or trending, but they aren't necessarily interested in your usual niche or content style. So, while your view count skyrockets, these new viewers don't convert into loyal followers who consistently like, comment, or share your other posts. This can dilute your overall engagement rate, making it look like your regular content isn't performing well, even if it's still reaching your core community. It’s crucial to look beyond just the sheer number of views or superficial "free Instagram likes" and delve into deeper engagement metrics. Are people saving your posts? Are they sharing them with friends? Are they leaving thoughtful comments that indicate they’ve truly connected with your message? These are often more valuable indicators of a healthy community than superficial likes. When a video goes viral, especially if it's a 'one-off' type of content, it can also set unrealistic expectations for future posts, creating a cycle of frustration. To navigate this, I've learned a few strategies that might help. Firstly, try to create content that, even if it has viral potential, aligns with your overall brand or niche. This increases the chances that new viewers will stick around for more of your regular content. Secondly, actively engage with the audience who does stick around. Respond to comments, ask questions in your captions, and build a genuine connection. Don't just chase fleeting trends; build a loyal community. Another important lesson is not to put all your eggs in one basket. As you mentioned, cross-posting and diversifying your presence across different social media platforms is vital. If one platform's algorithm decides to be particularly finicky, you still have other channels where your audience can find and engage with you. This not only protects you from algorithmic shifts but also helps you reach different segments of your audience who might prefer YouTube, TikTok, or even a blog. Understanding overall social media engagement metrics across all your platforms gives a much clearer picture of your growth and impact. It’s about building a resilient online presence, not just hoping for the next viral hit to magically solve everything. Focus on authentic connection, consistent value, and a diversified strategy to truly thrive online.
