JB Confinement Centre

Choosing a confinement centre was honestly one of the hardest parts of preparing for my baby’s arrival. I had absolutely no idea what facilities or services were important, so I was pretty much choosing based on instinct. Surprisingly, I didn’t even go for a viewing before deciding on Gem Confinement Centre—and looking back, I’m so glad I trusted my gut because I had a really wonderful experience.

From the moment I checked in, everything felt so effortless. The team had already gone through both my baby’s health booklet and my medical history, so I didn’t have to spend time explaining everything again. They even collected all the medications I needed and would bring them to me at the right timing every day. It really was a “just show up and rest” experience.

The babies are cared for by trained nurses, and you can genuinely tell that many of them truly love babies. Watching how gentle and patient they were gave me so much reassurance, especially as a first-time mum.

One feature I didn’t think I would appreciate so much was the CCTV above each baby’s cot. After giving birth, you suddenly become so attached to your little one and constantly wonder, “What is my baby doing? Is my baby okay?” Being able to check on my baby anytime through my phone without having to walk to the nursery gave me so much peace of mind.

In the first few days, they monitored my baby’s jaundice twice a day and updated me on the readings every single day. They also made sure my baby was feeding well and passing enough urine and stool to help reduce the jaundice level. Those daily updates really eased my anxiety. Thankfully, after about 10 days, my baby’s jaundice dropped below 100 and remained stable, so the monitoring could stop.

Every week, a doctor visits both the mums and babies to review our overall health and assess whether it’s time to increase the baby’s milk intake.

The nurses also checked my blood pressure, oxygen saturation and temperature daily, and cleaned my C-section wound every day. Recovery felt much less stressful knowing everything was being monitored closely.

Every morning, I would receive a detailed update about my baby—how much milk was taken the day before, the number of wet and dirty diapers, whether there was any diaper rash, as well as heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and body temperature. Waking up to those updates every day was incredibly reassuring because I knew my baby was eating well, growing well and being looked after around the clock.

They also measured my baby’s weight and length every week, so I could watch the progress and celebrate each little milestone.

The room was always stocked with red date tea, roasted rice tea and plain water. The housekeeping staff would always check if my flasks needed topping up whenever they came in, which was such a thoughtful touch.

During pregnancy, they arranged for me to visit their partnered TCM physician, who customised a 28-day herbal recovery plan based on my body condition and whether I was breastfeeding. I won’t pretend the herbal soup tasted amazing 😂, but it definitely made my body feel warm and helped with my recovery.

The package also included traditional Malay postnatal massage, which I really enjoyed. After two sessions, I felt so much lighter, more relaxed, and even my appetite improved.

The person in charge has also constantly checked in to ask for feedback and genuinely acted on the suggestions given by the mums. Whenever I needed help, she always tried her best to assist. As an introvert, I especially appreciated that almost everything could be communicated through WhatsApp. 😂

I also developed postpartum hives after delivery, and once I informed them, they followed up closely and even offered anti-itch medication, which made me feel so much more comfortable.

Of course, I can’t end this post without mentioning the food! 🍱 Both lunch and dinner were delicious, nutritious, and perfect for postpartum recovery. I genuinely looked forward to every meal.

Overall, I had such a positive confinement experience here. Looking after a newborn can be overwhelming, but having a team that genuinely cares for both mum and baby made those first few weeks so much easier.

If you’re looking for a confinement centre in Johor Bahru, this is definitely one I’d happily recommend. ❤️
