... Read moreHey everyone! Seeing my drawing progression for Chibi Sonic got me thinking about all the little tips and tricks I've picked up along the way. If you're looking to draw Sonic or any other character, here are some things I find super helpful, especially when it comes to getting those colors just right! When I start a new drawing, especially a character like Sonic, I always begin with very light guidelines. Think basic shapes! For a chibi Sonic, I usually start with a big circle for the head and a smaller oval for the body. His quills can seem tricky, but breaking them down into curved triangles helps a lot. And don't forget those iconic big eyes – they really give chibi characters their charm! My initial pencil sketch, showing those first guidelines, is always the most crucial step for getting the proportions right. I love using a lighter pencil (like an H or 2H) for my initial sketches, as you saw in my first stage. It makes it super easy to erase without leaving marks. Once I'm happy with the pose and proportions, I go over it with a darker pencil (like a B or 2B) or even a fineliner pen for those clean, crisp outlines. This really makes your artwork pop, just like in my second stage where I cleaned up the lines and added slight shading. That clean linework is key before you even think about coloring. Now, let's talk about the fun part: coloring! For Sonic, his main colors are pretty distinct – that vibrant blue for his body, peach for his muzzle and belly, and bright red for his shoes with white buckles. When I'm coloring, I usually start with the lightest shade first and then build up the darker tones for shading. For instance, with his blue fur, I might use a slightly darker blue or even a touch of purple in the shaded areas to give it depth. The OCR mentioned 'blue fur' and 'red shoes' – these are key for his look, and getting the color right makes him instantly recognizable. The final stage of having a fully colored drawing is so satisfying! What materials work best? I often use colored pencils because they allow for good blending and layering, which is great for subtle shading. Markers are fantastic for bold, flat colors, but you need to be quick to avoid streaks when blending. Whichever you choose, remember to layer your colors gently. Don't press too hard at first! This gives you more control and allows you to create smoother transitions. For highlights, sometimes I leave a tiny white space or use a white gel pen at the very end. Sonic isn't just about his colors; it's about his energy! When drawing him, try to capture his speed and confidence. Even in a chibi style, a little smirk or a dynamic pose can convey his personality. Think about how his quills might flow if he were running, or how his shoes are always ready for action. While my drawing shows a chibi version, thinking about these core elements from his classic look (like the JCA artwork in Sonic 3!) helps make it unmistakably Sonic. I hope these extra tips help you on your own drawing journey! It's all about practice and having fun. Share your Sonic drawings with me!
