What Allowance!?!
I didn't receive an allowance. I had 3 jobs at the age of 17. I bought my first car with my own money. Until then, I either rode my bike or walked (5+ miles each way).
ZERO ENTITLEMENT.
I am damned proud of how I grew up!
Growing up without an allowance was a defining experience for many in the Gen X generation. Like the author, I also did not receive regular pocket money as a teenager. Instead, the expectation was clear: if we wanted something, we had to work for it. Balancing school and multiple part-time jobs taught me invaluable lessons about responsibility, time management, and the true value of money. I remember walking or biking long distances to save money, often over 5 miles each way, just to avoid extra transportation costs. Those efforts paid off when I managed to buy my first car entirely with my own earnings. It wasn’t just about owning a vehicle; it was about the independence and pride that came from knowing I had earned it without any handouts. This experience instilled a mindset of zero entitlement, something that has shaped my work ethic and financial habits as an adult. Unlike some current generations where allowance and spending money might be expected, my upbringing emphasized personal accountability and resourcefulness. Participation in the workforce from a young age also built character and resilience. Holding down jobs while navigating schoolwork was challenging but rewarding, fostering skills that have aided me well beyond my teenage years. Reflecting on those times, I am immensely proud of the values instilled through hard work and self-reliance. It's a perspective that often contrasts with modern attitudes toward money and entitlement, but one that continues to resonate deeply with those who lived through similar experiences in the 1980s and early 90s.
