Welcome to Day 1 of using all the scrap wood I refused to throw away! 🪵✨
I wanted to turn literal shop garbage into a $500 modern art piece, but to make it actually look like high end luxury art, the finish was everything.
I used @RMP Finishes Milk paint in "Arabian Night" for that incredibly rich, deadflat black texture and used “Stoneware” to create a paint wash then I sealed all the blocks with Clear Furniture Wax to bring the natural grain back to life.
It completely transformed these dirty offcuts!
Let me know what I should build for Day 2! 👇
When I first started working with scrap wood, I was amazed at how much potential these leftover pieces actually had. It’s easy to think of offcuts as useless, but with the right approach, they can become beautiful art or decor. One important lesson I learned is that the finish really makes or breaks the project. Using RMP Finishes Milk Paint gave my scrap wood this rich, deadflat black base that felt incredibly luxurious. The key was layering: after painting with the Arabian Night, applying a subtle wash of Stoneware added depth and texture, avoiding the flat, dull look some paints can have. Sealing with a Clear Furniture Wax not only protected the surface but also revived the wood’s natural grain—something that’s often lost when working with painted wood. This step created a lovely contrast between the matte paint and the warm wood patterns, making the piece more visually interesting. If you’re thinking about trying this yourself, consider how you arrange the blocks. I experimented with spacing to create the feeling of 'icing' on a cake—giving the piece a sculptural dimension. Using spacers allowed the blocks to breathe and made the overall work feel more dynamic. Don’t be discouraged by the initial appearance of scrap or 'dirty offcuts.' With some patience and layering techniques, you can achieve results that rival expensive, high-end art pieces. Plus, it’s a rewarding way to turn materials that might otherwise go to waste into something truly special. I’m excited to see what ideas you come up with next on this scrap wood challenge—whether it’s a frame, a wall piece, or something totally unexpected!
