A Lesson from Mary: Appreciate the Moment
The Gospels are so rich and packed with meaning! Upon reading Luke 2, two verses popped out at me about Mary, the mother of Jesus. Two times (once during the Nativity and once later after finding Jesus in the temple, teaching) Scripture tells us that while all these amazing things are going on around her, Mary stops and treasures these things in her heart. We would do well to follow her example.
“18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” (Luke 2:18–19), “Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.” (Luke 2:51).

Reflecting on Mary’s example of treasuring moments in her heart, I’ve found it deeply inspiring in my own life, especially during times of stress or uncertainty. When we pause to truly appreciate the meaningful events around us—whether big or small—it deepens our gratitude and helps us find peace amidst chaos. In Luke 2, Mary’s contemplative nature during the Nativity and later at the temple teaches us the value of mindfulness rooted in faith. I try to emulate this by setting aside moments each day to quietly ponder my blessings and challenges, much like Mary did. This practice has helped me cultivate patience and a sense of awe for the seemingly ordinary moments that often go unnoticed. Moreover, the act of treasuring experiences is a powerful way to foster spiritual growth. During Lent, I experimented with a social media fast similar to the author’s, and this digital detox allowed me to focus more fully on my thoughts and prayers without distractions. It reinforced the importance of turning inward and valuing the present, echoing Mary’s example of internalizing significant life events. By embracing gratitude and reflection, we not only honor Mary’s faith but also enrich our own spiritual journeys. Such practices cultivate a heart that treasures, a mind that ponders, and a soul that finds joy in God’s unfolding plan. Whether through Bible study or daily meditation, following Mary’s example invites us to appreciate the sacredness of each moment with intentional awareness and love.
