Let’s not assume the worst of people

Sometimes I assume things in my mind without knowing the story. Or I might make up stories in my mind about someone which then gives me a negative view of them or of the world in general.

To answer before listening—

that is folly and shame. (Proverbs 18:13)

... Read moreIn my personal journey, I've found that jumping to conclusions about people often leads to unnecessary misunderstandings and conflicts. I once assumed a colleague was uninterested in teamwork simply because they were quiet in meetings. However, when I took the time to listen and understand their situation, I learned they were naturally introverted and overwhelmed with workload, not disinterested. This experience reminds me of Proverbs 18:13, which warns against answering before listening, labeling such behavior as folly and shame. It’s a powerful reminder that withholding judgment and seeking to understand first fosters healthier relationships and a more positive worldview. Practicing patience and empathy has helped me avoid making negative assumptions based on incomplete stories or surface impressions. Instead, I try to engage in open conversations and ask clarifying questions before forming opinions. This habit has brought unexpected kindness and deeper connections in both my personal and professional life. If you notice yourself making quick assumptions, try pausing and reflecting: Could there be more to the story? Are you projecting your own fears or experiences onto others? These questions help break the cycle of negativity and promote a more compassionate outlook. Ultimately, embracing this mindset not only benefits our interactions but also nurtures inner peace by releasing the burden of unwarranted suspicion. Letting go of assumptions invites us to see people more clearly and respond with grace, reinforcing the age-old wisdom found in biblical teachings and everyday experiences alike.
