Homemade toys for my rabbits 🐰

Sometimes I’ll even add small, handmade pillows inside for extra comfort, though they usually just rearrange them! Another fantastic option is creating shredding toys. Rabbits instinctively love to chew and shred, it keeps their teeth healthy and provides mental stimulation. Simple toilet paper or paper towel rolls can be cut into rings and then interlocked, or you can flatten them and cut fringes on the ends. You can even stuff these with some hay or a bit of their foraging salad mix for an added challenge. The key is to use plain, unscented cardboard – avoid anything with heavy inks, glues, or shiny coatings, as these can be harmful. I always make sure there's no tape or staples too! When sourcing cardboard, I tend to stick to shipping boxes or paper towel/toilet paper rolls that haven't been treated with anything. For treat puzzles, I often use small, clean cardboard boxes. I'll cut a few holes big enough for pellets or small treats to fall out when nudged. Then, I'll place some treats inside and seal it up. My bunnies have so much fun figuring out how to get the treats out, it's like a mini treasure hunt! It's an excellent way to provide mental enrichment and prevent boredom. I've found that rotating their toys frequently keeps them interested. What might be old news one week becomes exciting again the next! Besides cardboard, other safe materials for homemade rabbit toys include untreated wood blocks (like applewood or willow), natural grass mats, and even old towels tied into knots for tugging and shredding. Remember to always supervise your bunnies with new toys, especially when they're made from cardboard, just to ensure they aren't ingesting large amounts or getting stuck. Providing a variety of textures and challenges keeps them happy and mentally stimulated. But in my experience, these DIY rabbit toys out of cardboard are a total win-win: happy, entertained bunnies and a happy wallet for me!
