How to have a dog that doesnโt bolt
A very young puppy will not wonder off too far from you while off leash (15-40ft max and they come right back for safety). We started doing this at a park away from a busy road and when no other dogs were there at around 3-4 months of age. Itโs important to build this relationship of safety person when your dog is very young. I would even argue to allow them to get a little scared and for you to go and rescue them to build that relationship. The second photo she was running through a stream and there was a deep spot so she got on that rock and cried till I got herโฆ. good bonding moments like that. This will make it easier when they are older and want to go after things. I would recommend a long range dog collar to be used in case they start to chase after something as hunting can be very dangerous. When they are older they go a little under a football field away and circle you.
My dog has never run away out of a house or on an off leash outingโฆ even before the long range collar and she wanted something. Itโs all due to the off leash puppy exercises when she was little.
There arenโt many places to take her now that allow adult dogs off leash tho as this place burned down. It was really fun for all of us tho and it built a lot of good behavior and good memories.

Having a dog that doesn't bolt requires consistent training and establishing a strong bond from an early age. It's essential to introduce your puppy to off-leash experiences gradually, starting in safe areas like parks when they're still young, around 3 to 4 months old. During these early outings, allowing your puppy to experience minor moments of fear can strengthen their reliance on you as their safety net. A long-range dog collar can be invaluable for preventing chasing behavior, especially when they reach an age where exploring becomes a strong urge. Incorporating engaging activities during these training sessions, like running around a stream or navigating different terrains, can also enhance trust and awareness between you and your puppy. As they mature, dogs can often roam up to a football field away but will tend to circle back to their owner. Unfortunately, many outdoor spaces where dogs can roam freely have been lost due to various circumstances, limiting your options for off-leash adventures. Thus, it's crucial to cultivate good behavior and unforgettable memories during the available encounters. Being proactive about your dog's training and environment will help promote a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and your furry companion.
