Just like many of you, I'm constantly juggling my career, home life, and the exhilarating (but sometimes overwhelming) world of high school sports. From early morning practices to late-night games, it feels like a marathon, not a sprint. But over the years, I've picked up some essential strategies that have transformed chaos into calm, allowing me to support my child, manage my work, and still find moments for myself. One of the biggest game-changers for me has been mastering the art of meal planning. With a packed schedule, quick and healthy meals are a must. I dedicate a couple of hours on Sunday to plan out dinners for the week, often doing some batch cooking or prep work. Think sheet pan dinners, slow cooker recipes, or quick pasta dishes. Having pre-chopped veggies or marinated chicken ready to go saves so much time on those evenings when we're rushing from the sports court straight to dinner. I also make sure to pack nutritious snacks for my athlete – sometimes after a long practice, they're starving, and having something healthy on hand prevents unhealthy impulse buys. For instance, I always keep a stash of fruit, nuts, or energy bars, especially if they're wearing that 'KAUFMAN 13' jersey and burning tons of energy! Managing the high school sports schedule itself requires a black belt in organization. Our family calendar is synced for everyone, and it's our lifeline. All practices, games, and school events go in there, color-coded. I've also found carpooling to be a lifesaver, both for saving time and fostering a sense of community with other parents. Don't be afraid to reach out and create a carpool network – it truly makes a difference. Being flexible with my work schedule where possible, whether it's adjusting my lunch break or working remotely on certain days, has also been crucial to making sure I don't miss important moments. When it comes to volunteering, I've learned to be strategic. It's easy to overcommit, but finding roles that genuinely fit into my existing schedule is key. Sometimes it’s helping with concessions once a season, other times it’s organizing team snacks, or even just offering to take photos at a game. Every little bit helps, and it allows me to be part of the team community without completely burning out. It’s also a great way to meet other parents and build a support system. Finally, let's talk about sports mom must-haves. Beyond a reliable car and a good sense of humor, I always have a well-stocked game-day bag. This includes a comfortable portable chair (those bleachers can be brutal!), a blanket for chilly evenings, a large water bottle, small first-aid essentials, and plenty of snacks and drinks. For my athlete, a durable, spacious sports bag is essential for all their gear. And for special moments, like celebrating a 'SENIOR' athlete's final season, I always make sure there's a camera ready to capture those precious memories. We've had many family moments on the sports court, celebrating victories and supporting through losses.
