Reading Practice 🌸🫶🏽 📖

“Practice makes you better”

This is from #thegoodandthebeautiful I’ve been teaching her with this book for about a month. She started after learning her letter sounds. She’s able to sound out 2 letter words now. Yes, I count Consonants + Vowels as a word. Soon they’ll make 3 letter words, & so on!

If this curriculum is too expensive for some, I have a link below to print off your own blending sounds to teach your littos with. It’s from Jady A on #TPT 😊 just a helping hand! 🌹🫶🏽

... Read moreStarting your child on their reading journey is such a special experience, and honestly, it doesn't have to be overwhelming! Like many parents, I wanted to find a way to make learning to read fun and effective, especially for beginners. My little one started by learning individual letter sounds, and it's been incredible to see the progress in just a month. We've moved from individual sounds to blending two-letter words, like 'ma' and 'ne,' and even simple 'jo' sounds. It’s all about building those foundational blocks! One of the biggest keys I’ve found is consistency, even if it's just for short bursts. We aim for quick, engaging lessons, usually around 10-15 minutes, which keeps her focused and prevents burnout. For us, a structured curriculum like #thegoodandthebeautiful has been a fantastic guide. It breaks down reading into manageable steps, focusing heavily on phonics, which is crucial for early literacy. Seeing her sound out words and connect them to meaning is incredibly rewarding. After mastering 2-letter words, the next step is typically CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, like 'cat' or 'dog.' This is where the blending really clicks, allowing them to read simple words independently. To practice, we use flashcards, simple word games, and even just pointing out words in everyday life. We try to make it feel like a game, not a chore. For instance, when we see a stop sign, we might sound out S-T-O-P together. If a formal curriculum isn't quite right for your family or budget, there are so many wonderful free and affordable resources out there. As mentioned in the original post, Teachers Pay Teachers (#TPT) is a treasure trove! I found some 'Elemental Phonics' printables that are perfect for Level 1 learners, focusing on those initial blending sounds. These resources often include worksheets and activities that reinforce what you're teaching, making it easier to provide varied reading practice for kids. Beyond just sounding out, we also started introducing basic reading comprehension. After reading a short word or very simple sentence, I'll ask a simple question like, 'What did we just read?' or 'What sound did that word start with?' This helps them understand that reading isn't just decoding, but also about understanding meaning. Creating a positive and encouraging environment is vital. Celebrate every small victory – every letter sound learned, every word blended. It really helps build their confidence and makes them excited to learn more. Remember, every child learns at their own pace, so patience and a 'slow and steady' approach are your best allies in teaching your child to read.
