It served as a holy site where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties worshipped heaven and prayed for bountiful harvests. Crafted collectively by a team of official architects led by the Ministry of Works during the Ming Dynasty, its design drew inspiration from the ritual principles outlined in The Rites of Zhou. The core structures, including the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and the Circular Mound Altar, follow the "round heaven, square earth" layout. Numbers embedded in the design hold symbolic meanings representing the four seasons, twelve months, and twenty-four solar terms, while the sky-blue glazed tiles mirror the heavens—every detail embodies the philosophy of "harmony between man and nature."
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests itself is a paradigm of aesthetic excellence: three tiers of eaves rise gracefully, with red pillars, golden windows, and a sky-blue glazed tile roof. Inside, the floor is paved with "golden bricks" (a special type of high-quality brick), and at its center lies a natural stone slab bearing a dragon pattern. This circular hall is the ancient Chinese interpretation of "the roundness of heaven"—interestingly, structures like the Temple of Vesta in ancient Rome, the dwellings of the Inuit in the Arctic, and the homes of Indigenous peoples in the Americas are also circular. It’s an incredible coincidence that transcends time and space!
The color scheme has an intriguing backstory too: during the Ming Dynasty, the hall’s roof was originally decorated with three colors of glazed tiles—blue, green, and yellow. Blue symbolized the sky, green represented all living things, and yellow stood for the earth. However, a lightning-induced fire in 1878 (the 4th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty) destroyed the building. When it was reconstructed, the entire roof was replaced with pure blue tiles. Today, the combination of the hall’s golden body and indigo roof exudes both solemn grandeur and a warm charm.
When it comes to the beauty of symmetry, the balanced proportions of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests are a reflection of nature itself.
