When it comes to the classic skirt style of ancient Han Chinese women, the “Mamian Skirt” is undoubtedly an unmissable name. Gracefully known as the “Mamian Pleated Skirt”, it carries centuries of sartorial culture through its unique structure and flowing pleats.
From a structural perspective, the most distinctive feature of the Mamian Skirt lies in its “four-panel doors” design: two overlapping panels at the front and two at the back, creating a sense of layered beauty. The outer panels are often embroidered with delicate patterns or adorned with clever decorations, while the inner panels remain much simpler—sometimes with only light embellishment, sometimes completely plain—showcasing a subtle contrast of prominence and restraint. Along the sides, the skirt is filled with fine pleats that sway gracefully with every step, enhancing the wearer’s silhouette. The waistband is usually made from white fabric, symbolizing the blessing of “growing old together in harmony,” and is secured with ribbons or buttons, practical yet aligned with traditional aesthetics.
Tracing its history, the Mamian Skirt can be linked as early as the Song dynasty’s “Xuan Skirt”, and it gradually took shape during the Ming dynasty, becoming the quintessential attire for Han women. In the Chenghua reign of the Ming, the Mamian Skirt became especially fashionable in the capital: from empresses and consorts to ordinary women, everyone loved to wear it. However, social classes were clearly distinguished in the choice of fabric, ornamentation, and color: noblewomen favored fine silks and satins, embroidered with intricate motifs in vibrant, luxurious hues, while common women mostly wore coarse cloth, with simpler decorations and more subdued colors. It is worth noting that during the Ming, the term “Mamian Skirt” had not yet been coined, and the style remained relatively modest, exuding a gentle elegance reminiscent of the Jiangnan region.
Over the course of time, the Mamian Skirt continued to evolve: in the Qing dynasty, it became increasingly opulent, with more complex patterns and richer colors reflecting imperial grandeur; by the Republican era, the style returned to a more graceful and unadorned look, with simplified lines to suit modern lifestyles. Yet, despite these stylistic changes, the fundamental “Mamian” structure remained unchanged, preserving its identity as a garment of enduring cultural memory.
Fabric selection for the Mamian Skirt was equally thoughtful. Skirt panels were typically made of silk or satin, with different fabrics used for different styles. For example, pleated-side skirts (such as the “fish-scale pleated skirt”) required fabrics that could withstand repeated folding and hold their shape, often using brocaded silk, sometimes reinforced with silk threads between seams, combining texture with durability. On the other hand, the Langgan-style Mamian Skirt favored satin, its smooth surface and lustrous finish enhancing the visual impact of broad color blocks. Most Mamian Skirts were lined, usually with silk, to provide warmth and help maintain the skirt’s shape. Only in summer were they left unlined, to ensure breathability and coolness.
As for craftsmanship, traditional Mamian Skirts employed a flat, wraparound construction. In ancient times, when fabric widths were narrow, multiple panels of cloth had to be pieced together to provide enough allowance for pleating. With modern, wider fabrics, a single panel is often sufficient, making production more convenient. In the making process, pleated panels were first overlapped at the skirt doors and secured only at the waistline. The prepared waistband was then attached, along with ribbons or ties. Notably, the pleats were stitched only at the waistband, leaving them free below the waist, so they could sway naturally with movement. After careful ironing and finishing, a Mamian Skirt would emerge—an elegant fusion of traditional charm and masterful craftsmanship.
