As the footsteps of the Mid-Autumn Festival draw near, “moon gazing” and “talking about the moon” become an enduring sentiment in the hearts of Chinese people across the world. This affection for the full moon has remained vivid and alive for thousands of years.
A Mid-Autumn night is always expected to be clear and bright. When that round moon slowly rises into the sky, it appears like a silver plate suspended above, casting its serene glow across the earth. This full moon is no accident—each month, as the Earth and Moon align with the Sun in a particular orbit, we are able to see the Moon’s fully illuminated face. In the lunar calendar, this spectacle most often appears on the fifteenth or sixteenth day, inspiring the old saying: “The moon is fullest on the sixteenth, even if it waxes on the fifteenth.” Interestingly, the Moon does not shine by itself; the gentle moonlight we see is merely sunlight reflected from its surface. And yet, on the night of Mid-Autumn, this glow seems especially pure and enchanting. The festival falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when the harvest season is at its height. Thus, the full moon is also imbued with the blessing of abundance and completeness.
The Chinese love for gazing at the Mid-Autumn moon is deeply woven into cultural memory. As early as the Wei and Jin dynasties, scholars and literati began organizing moon-viewing gatherings. The Book of Jin records how Xie Shang once “sailed under the moon on an autumn night,” a vivid glimpse of refined pleasures beneath the lunar glow. By the Tang dynasty, the Mid-Autumn Festival had become an official holiday: aristocrats held banquets under the moonlight, with music and wine flowing, making moon-gazing a fashionable pastime. Entering the Song dynasty, the festivities grew even more lively. The festival was declared a public holiday; beyond moon gazing, the ritual of “worshiping the moon” became central, with people making wishes and offering prayers beneath its light. Night markets stayed open till dawn, and whether nobles or common folk, everyone could share in the joy of the moonlit night, creating a true atmosphere of nationwide celebration.
