Noche de velitas! 🇨🇴🕯️
Being far from Colombia isn’t easy… but gathering with my family, lighting candles, sharing our stories, and cooking the food we grew up with reminds me who I am.
We talk about the past, and we build new memories in a country that is now our home.
Food is my love language — and tradition is how I stay rooted 🇨🇴🤍
Noche de Velitas, or Night of the Little Candles, is a cherished Colombian tradition celebrated every December 7th to mark the start of the Christmas season. This beautiful custom involves lighting candles and colorful paper lanterns to honor the Virgin Mary and symbolize hope and light in the darkness. For Colombians living far from home, Noche de Velitas becomes a poignant way to connect with their heritage and family history. Gathering with loved ones to light candles reminds us of where we come from and the values that shape us. It’s a time to honor ancestors and celebrate the strength of cultural identity despite the distance. Sharing stories of the past during this evening fosters a sense of belonging and helps preserve family history for future generations. Food plays a vital role in these gatherings. Traditional Colombian dishes like buñuelos (fried cheese balls), natilla (a coconut custard dessert), and empanadas are often prepared and enjoyed together. For many, cooking these meals is an expression of love—a way to stay connected to their roots and relive childhood memories. These flavors bring warmth and comfort, reinforcing the bonds between family members in new homes abroad. In essence, Noche de Velitas is much more than a celebration; it is a ritual that uplifts the spirit, strengthens family ties, and honors Colombian culture worldwide. Whether lighting candles in a city far from Colombia or telling stories passed down through generations, this tradition offers a meaningful way to express identity and find joy during the festive season. Through Noche de Velitas, Colombians keep the light of their heritage alive, no matter where life takes them.
