Let's talk about child free weddings

This has been a super hot topic lately.

-My fiance and I WILL be having a child free wedding. Here's why.

~I experienced an unfortunate situation at my cousins wedding where there were two different toddlers babbling/making noise throughout the ceremony. The parents did nothing to try to quiet the children. It was in a super echoey church and I heard later that some people at the back of the room had trouble hearing their vows. Of course, the wedding was still beautiful but my cousin was really upset right afterwards. Thankfully nowadays she says she only has happy memories of her wedding but I personally just feel like that is something I would have a hard time forgetting about.

~The younger the children are who attend the more likely it is that something will go wrong. Children are somewhat unpredictable and even very well behaved kids can have moments where they act out or have a tantrum. It's perfectly fine to want to limit what you have to worry about at your own wedding.

~Children half to get fed too. If a couple bring their two kids their party has now doubled in size and the wedding party is still responsible for feeding extra mouths. My Fiance and I are working on a set budget and we are just not comfortable having an uncertain number of attendees.

-Not wanting children at your wedding doesn't mean you dislike children. I am actually a teacher and I love kids. It's almost BECAUSE I love kids and spend so much time with them that I want one day to just be with adults (mainly the hubby).

-Guests receive their invites at MINIMUM 4 months before the wedding, that is plenty of time to find a sitter/someone to watch your kids.

-Choosing to disregard a couples wishes for their wedding day is insanely and intentionally disrespectful. If the invite says no kids, you need to respect it. I was talking about this with my coworker and she told me that someone had brought their very rowdy kids to her wedding without permission. The level of disrespect for the is unreal to me. You wouldn't wear jeans to a black tie wedding, why would you bring children to a childfree wedding?

-The bride and groom will most likely not be mad if you politely decline the invite because you can't/don't want to leave your children. It's okay! We understand!

-It is ultimately OUR wedding.

... Read moreChoosing a child-free wedding is becoming increasingly common among couples who want to ensure their special day remains peaceful, intimate, and well-organized. It’s important to remember that this decision isn’t about disliking children; in fact, many brides and grooms deeply love kids but simply wish to have one day focused solely on celebrating with adults. From personal experience, children at weddings—especially very young ones—can unintentionally cause distractions, such as noise or tantrums, that might hinder key moments like the vows, particularly in sensitive venues like churches with echoey acoustics. Additionally, including children impacts the guest count and budget. Since couples plan their weddings tightly around certain numbers for catering and seating, adding unpredictable extra guests — toddlers who also need to be fed — can complicate logistics and increase costs unexpectedly. Inviting guests with children to find a sitter well in advance is common courtesy and aids the couple in managing their budget and the flow of the event. Respecting a child-free invitation is an essential part of wedding etiquette. Disregarding the couple’s wishes can be seen as disrespectful, much like wearing inappropriate attire to a black-tie event. If circumstances make it impossible to attend without children, it is perfectly acceptable and usually understood if guests politely decline the invite. Ultimately, the wedding day belongs to the couple, and honoring their preferences ensures everyone shares a positive, memorable celebration. If you’re planning a child-free wedding, clear communication is key. Including this detail on your invitations months in advance provides guests ample time to make appropriate arrangements. You might also consider offering recommendations for trusted local babysitting services or hosting a separate event for children to participate in festivities in a more suitable environment. By thoughtfully addressing common concerns and encouraging understanding, couples confidently choose child-free weddings to craft a day that is meaningful, harmonious, and fully focused on their union and celebration with close friends and family.

We actually get to do both! A few days ago, we quietly eloped in Vegas with just our parents, siblings, and grandparents. Since we live just over the Arizona border (only about an hour from Vegas), it was the easiest and most stress-free option. No decorations, no cake, no vendors — just a $500 tot
