Me vs The Drain 😷🚿
I thought this pink ring was just stubborn soap scum… turns out it’s way worse.
Meet Serratia marcescens, aka the uninvited guests who won’t leave. I fought it with vinegar, scrubbing, and a lot of “why me” moments. Now, I’m on a mission to keep it gone with regular wipe downs - because who needs a villain in their shower?
Here’s the full cleaning routine:
Step 01: Scrub 🧼
Start with a scrub brush and your favorite bathroom cleaner. I use Scrubbing Bubbles Grime Fighter to lift the grime. It’s oddly satisfying… and a little gross.
Step 02: Disinfect ⏱️
Spray with white vinegar or a disinfectant and let it sit for 5–10 minutes. This kills the bacteria and helps keep it from coming back (for now).
Step 03: Rinse 🚿
Rinse it down and keep things dry when you can.

Serratia marcescens is a type of bacteria that thrives in damp environments, making your shower the perfect breeding ground for this unwelcome invader. Not only can it discolor surfaces, but long-term exposure can lead to other issues, including sinus infections or urinary tract infections. The good news is that keeping your shower clean doesn't require heavy-duty chemicals. Here’s an extended cleaning routine that prevents Serratia marcescens from taking over your shower. **1. Regular Prevention:** After each shower, use a squeegee to remove excess water from the walls and floor. This minimizes moisture build-up, hindering bacteria growth. **2. Use Natural Cleaners:** A mixture of water and vinegar can be an effective natural cleaner. The acidity of vinegar not only helps break down soap scum but also naturally disinfects surfaces. **3. Weekly Routine:** Set a weekly reminder to clean your shower using your chosen method; this could be with Scrubbing Bubbles or a homemade solution. Make sure to scrub all corners where moisture may accumulate. **4. Monitor for Signs:** Keep an eye out for pink stains or discolorations, as these can signal a resurgence of Serratia marcescens. If you notice any, tackle it immediately with your standard cleaning routine. **5. Ventilation Matters:** After showering, keep the bathroom door open to ensure proper ventilation. This simple practice helps moisture escape, greatly reducing microbial growth. By following these steps, you’ll not only maintain a sparkling clean shower but also ensure your health isn’t compromised by these bathroom invaders.
