🍵 One Day Trip Uji | Green Tea City Stroll by Uji River

Today, take a tour of Uji like One Day Trip. It is another city that is suitable for a no-rush trip, because the main places are not far away, walk through the city, stop by the shrine, find something delicious to eat, and keep watching the river.

There are two main trains on the Mauji journey: JR Nara Line, JR Uji Station or Keihan Uji Line, Keihan Uji Station.

Today we choose to sit on JR and walk in a loop before coming back to JR.

📖 Statue of Murasaki Shikibu

The area near Uji Bridge will have a statue of/Statue of Murasaki ShikibuA female writer of the Heian era, the author of The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari), regarded as one of Japan's most important pieces of literature.

The reason there is a statue of her in Uji is because the last 10 chapters of The Tale of Genji are so staged in Uji that they are called Uji Jujo or "Ten Uji Chapters," so the city has a strong connection to the Genji affair.

🍵 Byodo-in Omotesando

Street/Byodo-in OmotesandoThis line is very fun because both sides of the way are full of shops, candy shops, and, of course, mauji...Green tea is full. 😂

But one of the things we secretly shocked was to meet a lot of Thai people, haha. Walking around until there was a moment feeling like there were only Thai people around.

Continuing to follow the road, it will reach the important landmark of Uji.

🏯 Byodo-in Temple

/วัดเบียวโดIt is an old temple that dates back to the Heian period, with the most famous building being Phoenix Hall, or Hoku-dho, built in 1053, and its image is also on the Japanese 10 yen coin.

But.....We do not enter. The reason is that the cash is exhausted 😂, but walk past first. Anyone who follows this route recommends to prepare cash with you so that it is not like us. 🥲

🌿 Then we go across the other side of the river through Tachibana Bridge → Asagiri Bridge. Here we really like the atmosphere. Walk slowly and see the river view. There is another time when you feel that you don't need to have a destination all the time. Just take a walk.

📖 Statue of the Ten Uji Chapters

After walking across the Asagiri Bridge, you'll find another statue associated with The Tale of Genji.

The statue was created to convey Uji Jújó or The Ten Uji Chapters, the last 10 chapters of The Tale of Genji featuring the city of Uji as a key scene, with the statue depicting Prince Niou and Ukifune on the edge of the Uji River.

This is like connecting back to the Statue of Murasaki Shikibu that we've seen since the first part of the day. Anyone who's ever read or been interested in The Tale of Genji should enjoy finding traces all over Uji, and this area is on the river. The atmosphere is pretty good. Take a photo before walking. 📖🍃

⛩️ Uji Shrine.

/ศาลเจ้าอูจิจินจาIt is a relatively small shrine and the atmosphere is calmer than the area of the Biodo Temple. The presiding deity is Prince Uji no Wakiiratsuko, the son of Emperor Jin.

The other thing that is very cute is that the shrine symbol is related to the rabbit 🐇, with the legend that the rabbit used to guide the prince back to Uji, so it was born as the story of Mikaeri Usagi, or "the rabbit that turned around."

⛩️ Ujigami Shrine.

If you come to Uji Shrine, we recommend walking later here./ศาลเจ้าอุจิงามิจินจะIt is very important in history, with the main building regarded as one of the examples, the oldest surviving Shinto shrine architecture in Japan, and the shrine is also part of the UNESCO Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto World Heritage Site.

But even though it's so important, the atmosphere is relatively calm compared to Uji's main attractions.

Personally, we recommend Uji Shrine + Ujigami Shrine because they are close to each other, not difficult to walk, and see another corner of Uji that is different from the tea shop zone and Byodo-in.

🍜 stay for dinner at Tsuen Main Branch.

After walking for a while, it's time to get something to eat. We stopped by/Tsuen Main BranchWhich is near Uji Bridge.

This shop itself has a long history, because Tsuen says it started in 1160 and is one of Japan's most historic tea shops.

We ate a green tea menu and tapped it with ice cream. 🍵🍦

At first I really thought of returning from Keihan Uji Station, which is on this side, but then I thought again...We haven't walked across the Uji Bridge yet. 😂

So change the plan, walk across the Uji Bridge back to the other side, take one last view of the river, and then return to the train at JR Uji Station, and we think it's a great way to end today. 🤍

Uji is a city where we don't feel the need to pick up a place. Just keep walking, stop by the shrine, eat green tea and spend most of the day with the view of the river. 🍵🌿
