When someone asks me if I’m gonna make good use of my free time as an MS4 a month away from Match #medicalschool
Having completed my clinical rotations as an MS4, the question of how best to spend this newfound free time is truly significant. I found it important to strike a balance between rest and productive preparation. After the intense pace of clinical rotations, taking time to recharge mentally and physically can boost resilience for the upcoming Match and residency. One practical way I spent my free time was by reviewing specialty-specific knowledge tailored to my residency interests. This helped me feel more confident about the transition and eased some of the anxiety about starting residency. Additionally, I used the time to engage in activities that rejuvenated me—such as exercise, reading unrelated to medicine, and reconnecting with friends and family. I also prioritized organizing my application materials and preparing for interviews. Mock interviews and refining my personal statements gave me a head start. Importantly, I reminded myself that this period was a valuable opportunity for personal reflection and growth beyond academics. Setting small, achievable goals to maintain momentum without overwhelming myself was key. In summary, finishing clinical rotations opens a new chapter filled with both uncertainty and opportunity. By intentionally balancing preparation with self-care and personal enrichment, I believe every MS4 can navigate this transitional phase successfully and enter residency feeling prepared and energized.
