Replying to @Pauline B & I am INCAPABLE of changing my American ways😂💀 #americaninparis #paris #france #expat #cultureshock
Living as an American expat in France has definitely reshaped my perspective on daily habits, especially regarding fitness routines during warm weather. Back home in the US, when it's hot, I instinctively seek out the gym's cool air conditioning to workout, almost like a sanctuary from the heat. The gym is bustling regardless of the weather because staying fit is a priority, and many don't let a sunny day stop them from their routine. However, in France, the approach is almost the complete opposite. People truly seize the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors when the sun is shining. Running, biking, walking, or just socializing with friends in parks and terrace cafés replaces the indoor gym sessions during hot days. It’s like the weather invites a lifestyle change that brings health and social bonding together. This cultural contrast may stem from different attitudes towards work-life balance and social engagement. Europeans tend to prioritize spending time outside and valuing the natural environment, using it as a backdrop for exercise and leisure. It also favors natural vitamin D intake and fresh air, which are beneficial for both physical and mental well-being. For me personally, adapting to this meant embracing outdoor workouts even when it’s warm. At first, I missed the reliable comfort of air conditioning, but now I appreciate the vibrant atmosphere of people enjoying their city and nature. It’s refreshing, motivating, and surprisingly effective. I've found that morning or evening runs along the Seine or strolls through local parks are not just fitness activities but also cultural experiences. If you’re an American visiting or moving to France, or just curious about exercise culture differences, I encourage trying the European approach during good weather. Ditch the gym for a day and explore outdoor fitness — you might discover a new favorite habit that combines health, enjoyment, and cultural immersion perfectly.
