how I flattened stomach & got ab definition ✨🤍

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to abs and gut health. It took me years of trial and error to finally figure this out. Here’s my story, and everything I learned…

I gained about 30 pounds after graduating college and let my health and fitness slip. The transition to full-time work was difficult for me, and I put my health on the back burner to keep up with my new schedule.

About a year and a half ago, I decided enough was enough and wanted to focus on my health again. I spent weeks researching the science of fat loss, exercise, nutrition, and gut health, and began my fat loss journey.

The first six months were challenging. I tried to prioritize whole foods and protein but only lost a little weight. I felt like I was working hard but not getting the results I wanted. So, I decided to push myself harder with exercise.

After a few months of that, I still wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. Despite trying to avoid it, I finally decided to track my calories. This was the key for me. There’s no one-size-fits-all diet or approach, but for me, tracking accelerated my fat loss like crazy.

I researched the science of gut health and decided to increase my fiber intake, drink more water, and eat more fermented foods.

For the last six months, I’ve also tracked my protein, calories, and fiber daily. I’ve lost a total of 28 pounds of fat using this method.

I’ve noticed huge improvements in my gut health from these changes, and my stomach has gotten flatter. Of course, some of this is from fat loss, but a healthy gut and good digestion also contribute.

Throughout my journey, I’ve learned that a flat stomach with ab definition comes down to a few key factors:

1. Body fat percentage: To see ab definition, you need a low enough body fat percentage. The percentage needed will differ depending on where you store fat.

2. Amount of muscle mass in your abdomen: More muscle allows you to see those muscles more easily, even at a higher body fat percentage.

3. Good gut health and digestion: Bloating, poor digestion, or an unhealthy gut can prevent a flat stomach.

Some of this comes down to luck and genetics, but with persistence, you can always outwork “bad luck.”

While core exercises are super important, the real secret, I discovered, lies in understanding your body composition. For women, achieving a 'toned stomach meaning' often comes down to two main factors: reducing overall body fat percentage and building lean muscle mass in your abdomen. You can have the strongest abs in the world, but if they're hidden under a layer of fat, you won't see them. On the flip side, being too lean without muscle can leave you looking 'skinny fat.' It's about finding that balance that creates a truly 'toned midsection.' Getting to a body fat percentage where your abs become visible is a highly individual journey, influenced by genetics and where your body naturally stores fat. For many women, this might be a bit higher than what you see championed by fitness models, and that's perfectly okay! My focus shifted from just 'losing weight' to 'losing fat' while preserving muscle. This meant prioritizing protein, lifting weights, and ensuring I was in a slight calorie deficit consistently. It wasn't about extreme diets, but sustainable changes that helped me understand 'define flattened' for my own physique. Beyond body fat and muscle, gut health was a game changer for me. I used to suffer from constant bloating, which made my stomach look distended even when I was at a healthy weight. This definitely didn't align with my vision of 'how I flattened my stomach.' I learned that a healthy gut biome is crucial for efficient digestion, nutrient absorption, and reducing inflammation. Eating fermented foods like kimchi and sauerkraut, increasing my fiber intake from diverse fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and drinking plenty of water made a noticeable difference. It wasn't just about feeling better internally; the visual impact on my midsection was huge. It helped me truly understand the holistic 'flatten definition' which goes beyond just physical appearance. For any woman looking to achieve a 'toned stomach,' remember that patience and consistency are key. It’s not about quick fixes but about building sustainable habits. Focus on nourishing your body, challenging your muscles, and listening to your gut. These are the real tips that helped me achieve my personal goals for a truly flattened and toned abdomen.
