If I had a brand, I would be way too ashamed to do this to a creator.
Collaborating with brands as a creator can be rewarding but also risky, as I learned through my experience with a Korean coffee brand on the sweet potato latte project. Being genuinely enthusiastic about helping their struggling startup, I dove deep into product R&D, branding, and marketing without upfront compensation, driven by trust and friendship. However, this turned into a painful lesson about protecting your creative work and maintaining clear agreements. One key takeaway is the importance of setting clear boundaries and legal safeguards, such as involving an intellectual property lawyer even if you trust your partners. Startups often face sales difficulties, and creators can play a huge role in turning things around, but the imbalance can be exploited if roles and rights aren’t explicitly defined. I was shocked when the brand used my branded content as ads without my knowledge, repurposed the collaboration product as their own, and removed my branding from packaging despite prior agreements. Going through this ordeal affected my mental health deeply; it drained me to confront friends who took advantage of my goodwill. I eventually decided to cut ties completely, opting for recognition over financial gains just to salvage some credit for my creative contributions. It's a cautionary tale for creators: no matter how close the relationship seems, always formalize deals and keep your intellectual property protected. Moreover, it’s vital for creators to be vigilant about how their content is used post-collaboration. Check regularly if your videos and marketing materials are being employed properly and fairly. Transparency and communication are crucial throughout the partnership. Remember, collaboration should be a two-way street where both parties respect and honor commitments. Despite the pain from this experience, it also inspired me to be better prepared and more discerning with future partnerships. Moving forward, I seek collaborations that value mutual respect and clear, documented agreements.
