football player x the assistant he didn’t appreciate enough

I am so desperately in love with this book and with Mariana Zapata for giving it to me (I’m convinced she wrote it for me alone).

Vanessa and Aiden scratched every single itch I have. I adore them. Aiden’s stoic, antisocial behavior (which blooms throughout the story) and Vanessa’s bright and welcoming personality clash in the most delicious way possible. These two opposites attract, but VERY slowly. This burn was so so worth it, and when we finally got to the end… WOW.

Aiden is professional football player in his prime who relies heavily on his assistant Vanessa to maintain his routine. When she quits following years of demanding work under his employ, he very quickly realizes how much he needs her - and this turns into him realizing just how much he needs her as a person, not just as his assistant.

I can’t explain why this one hits so hard. Something in this particular slow burn is so addicting. I can’t explain, so I guess you’ll have to give it a try…

5/5 🌟

... Read moreOne of the most compelling aspects of this story is the nuanced development of Aiden and Vanessa's relationship. It’s rare to find a romance where the emotional growth is paced so deliberately that every interaction feels earned and authentic. As someone who’s read numerous sports romances, I found this portrayal of a professional football player deeply reliant on his assistant refreshingly realistic. The portrayal doesn’t shy away from the challenges of balancing demanding careers with personal connections. The slow burning tension creates a gripping narrative tension that hook readers deeply. Watching Vanessa step away after years of devoted work, and then witnessing Aiden’s gradual, heartfelt realization of her value—both professionally and personally—is a powerful reminder of how we often overlook the quiet support systems in our lives. Additionally, the dynamic between Aiden’s reserved, almost grumpy personality and Vanessa’s warmth is beautifully crafted. Their slow-but-sure emotional thawing reflects real-life complicated relationships, making their eventual connection all the more satisfying. I also appreciated the book’s focus on the assistant role, which can sometimes be underrepresented or stereotyped in romance novels. Here, Vanessa is both indispensable and deeply human, proving that behind every great athlete is someone managing the chaos. In reading this, I was reminded of how important it is to acknowledge and appreciate those who support us quietly from behind the scenes. The themes of reliance, respect, and falling in love slowly really struck a chord and made this book stand out in the sports romance genre. For readers intrigued by the blend of professional sports intensity and heartfelt romance, "The Striker" is a wonderful recommendation. Its setting and character depth elevate it beyond the typical slow burn romance, creating an addictive, comforting read that resonates long after the last page.
