Roblox as a parent

So me and my daughter build our stress and eye hand coordination playing Roblox obbys but the sense of pride I get beating these hard ones…I’m a gamer from my day but I feel like Roblox is kid based I know it’s not but it feels so dumb getting so pumped that I beat it. Anyone else play kids games and get to into it.

... Read moreSince sharing my experience with Roblox obbys, I've had so many parents reach out, curious about this platform. It’s true, at first, I just saw it as a 'kid's game,' but playing with my daughter has opened my eyes to its potential for family bonding and skill-building. One of the biggest questions I get is about safety. 'Is Livetopia party safe for kids?' or 'What about Berry Avenue Roblox age rating?' are common concerns. And they're valid! My approach has been to be actively involved. We play together mostly, but when she plays solo, I make sure her parental controls are robust. I primarily let her explore experiences that are rated E10+ or lower. We always chat about what she's playing and who she's interacting with. It’s crucial to understand that Roblox is a platform, not a single game, so experiences vary wildly. Reading reviews and trying out games yourself (or with your child) before they dive deep is a good habit. The community aspect is another area to navigate. While many interactions are positive, like helping each other Skip Stage! in an obby, there can also be instances of 'trolling.' We've had conversations about not engaging with negative comments and knowing when to block or report users. It's an opportunity to teach digital citizenship in a practical way. I've also learned about the many ways players interact, from creating their own worlds to trading items. For example, some games allow players to Gift items, which is something we discuss regarding in-app purchases and sharing responsibly. Beyond just fun, I've noticed genuine advantages. The obbys we play together really do enhance her eye-hand coordination and problem-solving skills – and mine too! There's a lot of creativity on Roblox; watching her design avatars or even just strategize how to get past a tricky obstacle is amazing. It teaches perseverance. Many experiences encourage collaboration, which fosters social skills. It's not just about what Roblox teaches us in terms of specific skills, but also how it encourages imaginative play and social interaction in a controlled environment. For families looking to start, I highly recommend finding games you can genuinely enjoy together. Besides obbys, we've explored building games, simulation games, and even some story-driven adventures. Look for experiences that promote teamwork. Setting clear boundaries for screen time is also key. We have a family rule about when and how long we play, and it works for us. And regarding in-game purchases, we have a system where she earns Robux for chores, so she learns the value of money and makes thoughtful choices about what she buys. Ultimately, Roblox has become a surprising source of connection for my daughter and me. It's more than just a game; it's a shared world where we learn, laugh, and sometimes even get a little competitive. If you're a parent on the fence, consider diving in alongside your child. You might just discover an unexpected joy and a new way to bond.

You are not a sh*tty parent
You don’t react calmly to every situation? That doesn’t make you a sh*tty parent. You’d rather hide in the back of the closet than play dolls with your child (because you hate dolls)—nope, doesn’t mean you’re a sh*tty parent. The fact is, great parenting is not the same thing as perfect parenting.
