My Sport: Lifting
I'm not sure if this is considered a sport, but it's keeping me active!
✨ I've been lifting (powerlifting) since early 2022
✨ Favorite Lift: Barbell Squats
✨ Heaviest Lift: Squats, 155 lbs.
✨ This has really helped me with quality of life.. and I really enjoy looking at my muscles
Hey everyone! Seeing so many of you interested in my journey, I wanted to share a bit more about getting started with lifting, especially if you're like me and wondering if it's truly 'your sport.' When I first considered weightlifting, it felt really intimidating. All those heavy weights, loud gyms, and complicated machines! But honestly, it's one of the best decisions I've ever made for my body and mind. If you're thinking of dipping your toes into weightlifting, here are a few things I learned that might help you get started: 1. Don't Be Afraid to Start Small: You don't need to lift 155 lbs on day one! I started with just the barbell, sometimes even just dumbbells, focusing purely on form. Watching countless YouTube videos and even hiring a trainer for a few sessions made a huge difference. Good form prevents injuries and makes your lifts much more effective. Remember those dumbbells in the gym? They're your friends for learning movements before you hit the barbell racks. 2. Find Your 'Why': For me, it was initially about getting active and seeing how strong I could become. Then it evolved into appreciating my muscles and the confidence that came with it. What's your motivation? Is it strength, aesthetics, mental clarity, or just trying something new? Knowing your 'why' will keep you going on days you don't feel like heading to the gym. 3. Consistency Over Intensity (Especially at First): Showing up three times a week and doing a solid, focused workout is better than one super intense session that leaves you burnt out for a week. Your body needs time to adapt and recover. I found that tracking my progress, even small increments, was incredibly motivating. Seeing my squat weight increase, even by just 5 or 10 pounds, was a huge win! 4. Fuel Your Body Right: Lifting heavy requires good nutrition. I learned that prioritizing protein and complex carbs really helped with my energy levels and muscle recovery. It's not about strict diets but making smarter choices to support your training. 5. Embrace the Process and Celebrate Small Wins: There will be days when you feel strong, and days when the weight feels heavier than usual. That's totally normal! Don't compare your journey to anyone else's. Celebrate every personal best, whether it's an extra rep, a heavier lift, or just showing up when you didn't want to. Seeing those muscles flex in the mirror after a tough session becomes its own reward. Beyond the physical changes, weightlifting has honestly transformed my mental game. The discipline, the problem-solving of how to get stronger, and the sheer accomplishment after a challenging lift just spills over into other areas of my life. It's an incredible confidence booster. So, is lifting a sport? For me, absolutely! It’s a continuous challenge, a journey of self-discovery, and a powerful way to feel amazing in my own skin. Give it a try, you might just find your new passion!
