Which would be better??
I need to know opinions!
I personally have experienced poor bedside manner from a doctor who is brilliant. Of course I do feel like I always have to take into consideration the solutions she gives me to problems; and consider if there’s a more holistic approach. But that’s not her specialty so I don’t fault her for that.
I’d have to pick the first option, because I can handle someone who might be slightly unkind in tone (maybe not on purpose?) but is truly wanting what’s best for me, versus someone who lacks in knowledge but is kind.
What are your thoughts?

Choosing between a brilliant doctor with poor bedside manner and a kind doctor with less diagnostic skill is a common healthcare dilemma. Many patients value expertise because accurate diagnosis and effective treatment are often crucial for their health outcomes. Although bedside manner influences the patient's comfort and trust, medical knowledge tends to be the deciding factor when serious health concerns arise. In fact, research shows that both aspects are important, but when forced to choose, patients often prioritize the doctor's ability to deliver the right treatment. It’s not uncommon for patients to tolerate a less pleasant tone from doctors if they feel confident in their precise medical skills and understanding of their health issues. On the other hand, kindness and empathy during consultations can impact a patient's willingness to openly share symptoms and follow treatment plans, which also affects recovery. Many patients, like those expressing opinions in various forums, wish for a balance—doctors who combine medical brilliance with compassionate communication. Until that ideal is more widespread, patients have to weigh their priorities. If you find yourself facing this choice, consider your personal needs: Are you dealing with a complex condition requiring high expertise, or do you value emotional reassurance more? Understanding your priorities can help you make informed decisions about your healthcare providers. Ultimately, this discussion encourages healthcare systems to improve doctor-patient communication training alongside medical education, so patients can receive both effective treatment and compassionate care.

I also vote for the not great bedside manner but is brilliant. She doesn’t sugar coat things or pamper me as a patient. She tells me truth and I need that. I save the pampering from my hubby. But when it came time for an emergency c section and everything was going the opposite it was supposed to I felt 💯 sure that she knew what she was doing. She is calm in stressful situations and that is important for me from a Dr.
