Life Lately: Newborn Snuggles & Big Kid Chaos
Adapting to life with a newborn… and three older littles (4, 6, and 8) 🤯🍼
I won’t lie — it’s loud, it’s messy, and I’ve had cereal for dinner more than once lately… but somehow, we’re figuring it out. ❤️
Here’s what’s been helping me survive (and sometimes even thrive) in this wild season:
✨ Divide & conquer: I let the big kids help where they want to help — not where I expect them to. One loves reading to the baby, one brings me diapers, and one just wants to be left alone with their Legos. And that’s okay.
🧺 Lowering the bar: I’m not doing all the things. If it’s clean-ish and fed-ish, I call it a win.
⏳ Micro-moments of calm: A cup of coffee before the baby wakes up. A quick dance party in the kitchen with the kids. Five minutes alone in the bathroom (rare, but sacred).
🤍 Gentle reminders: My older kids still need me too. I’m learning to be present in smaller, more meaningful ways — a cuddle during a show, listening while we color, letting them help cook dinner or bake with me.
Every day looks different, and I’m still learning. But somehow, love expands to fit everyone. Even when my patience doesn’t. 😅

Adjusting to life with a newborn and older siblings can be overwhelming, but it's also a transformative journey filled with love and growth. It’s essential to embrace the chaos while developing strategies to manage the demands of a larger family. The key is to shift expectations and find support where you can. Many parents find success in using a 'divide and conquer' approach. Allowing older siblings to engage in their interests, whether it’s reading to the baby or helping fetch supplies, fosters a sense of responsibility and involvement. Celebrating the small wins, even if it means accepting a less-than-perfect environment, can significantly ease stress. Moreover, creating micro-moments to recharge—such as enjoying a quiet cup of coffee or having a dance party—can uplift spirits and improve mental well-being. These fleeting breaks for self-care are crucial in maintaining balance and sanity during hectic days. Remember, being present for older children during this transition is equally important. Simple gestures of love and attention can strengthen family bonds amidst the bustling lifestyle. Invite them into everyday activities, whether cooking or crafting, to cultivate quality time that fosters connection. Lastly, joining communities of fellow parents can provide invaluable support. Sharing experiences on platforms like #MomOf4 or #NewbornLife can help normalize feelings and offer advice. Embracing the journey and learning from each step can turn the challenges of blending a newborn into the family with the joys of motherhood into a nurturing chaos filled with love.
