Depression doesn't care if life seems "good"

I've struggled with depression since my childhood, and growing up in the rust belt caused me to internalize most of these thoughts.

I always thought "could be worse", now, as an adult, it's a struggle to find a reason to get up in the morning. Most people see me as someone who can cheer up a room, but within a year, my life has really gone down hill atleast mentally.

Once, I was a part of Greek life, a decently large group of friends, and at one point, a prodigy. Since November of 2023, most of that is gone. While many great things have occurred, I still am locked into this draining mentality that nothing really matters.

Coping wise, my fiance and I have been trying to find common ground, which includes hiding any objects that can be dangerous when I'm at my lowest. Otherwise, I try to research a topic or rewatch tv shows from my childhood. I'm trying to wedding plan as well and find reasons to keep going. Shameless is a must watch for me ngl, and besides that gaming. I am definitely not at my best but any advise or such helps.

... Read moreIt's so incredibly tough when you're going through depression, especially when everyone around you thinks your life is 'perfect.' I completely get what you mean about depression not caring if life seems 'good.' I've felt that profound disconnect myself – celebrating milestones externally while feeling utterly hollow inside. It's like living a double life, and the sheer exhaustion of maintaining that facade, coupled with the guilt of feeling down when you 'should' be happy, can be another heavy layer. This feeling often makes us question our own struggles, thinking, 'I have so much, why am I still like this?' But that's the insidious nature of major depression; it doesn't follow logical rules. Beyond the fantastic strategies you've mentioned, like finding comfort in familiar shows (seriously, Shameless is a relatable escape!) or diving into gaming, I've found a few other things helpful in coping with major depression when it hits hardest. One small but mighty trick for me has been creating a tiny, non-negotiable daily routine. Even if it’s just making my bed, opening the blinds, or stepping outside for five minutes to feel the sun, these small victories can sometimes break through the inertia. It's not about achieving greatness, but about proving to myself that I can still do something, however small. I also keep a 'joy journal,' where I jot down any tiny moment of peace or happiness, no matter how fleeting. On really dark days, looking back at those entries reminds me that joy is still possible. It took me a long time to realize that seeking professional help wasn't a sign of weakness, but a profound act of self-care. Talking to a therapist who specialized in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helped me challenge some of those ingrained negative thought patterns, especially the 'could be worse' mentality that kept me stuck. It's amazing you have your fiancé's support; that’s truly invaluable. I've also learned the importance of selectively opening up to trusted friends or even online communities. There's a particular kind of relief that comes from realizing others understand the nuanced struggle of living with a mental illness that isn't always visible. Sharing my truth, even if just to one person, often lightens the load a little. The part about hiding dangerous objects resonates deeply. It's a stark reminder of how insidious depression can be. What I've tried to focus on, alongside my support system, is identifying my personal triggers – specific situations, times of day, or even internal thoughts that tend to spiral me downwards. Having a pre-planned 'distraction kit' or a list of people to call has been a lifesaver in those moments. And please, remember that healing isn't linear. There will be good days and bad days, and it's okay to not be okay. Giving myself permission to just be without judgment, even when productivity feels impossible, has slowly started to chip away at the internalized shame. Building your life, planning a wedding – these are huge, wonderful things, and it's incredibly brave to navigate them while dealing with this. Keep holding onto those reasons to keep going, no matter how small they seem. You are not alone in this fight.

I am so sorry you’re going through this. Side note, what is the rust belt? Anyway, sometimes you just have to take life moment by moment. I’ve been there.
