Gee's Bend Quilters
Their quilts gained national attention in 2002 through the exhibition The Quilts of Gee's Bend, which traveled to major museums across the United States. Art critics praised the quilts for their improvisational designs, vibrant colors, and striking resemblance to modern abstract art.
The quilters also played a role in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1966, they formed the Freedom Quilting Bee, a cooperative that helped Black women earn income through quiltmaking while supporting economic empowerment in their community.
My Mom:
Mensie Lee Pettway (born 1939) is one of the most celebrated quiltmakers from the historic Gee's Bend community in Alabama. She is part of the renowned tradition of African American quiltmaking that has brought international recognition to Gee's Bend.
