Why you should find a therapist who understands ND

I cycled through dozens of therapists my entire life, and with them, came a ton of different diagnoses: OCD, PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder, depression... The list became quite long.

Imagine my surprise when I was given medications to treat some of these things, and none of them ever actually worked. I couldn't figure out why. It wasn't until about a decade later that I got two diagnoses that changed everything: autism and ADHD.

Since then, I've started medication, and also found a therapist who understands my neurodivergence. She gives me appropriate feedback, helps me to find systems that work with my brain instead of against it, and most importantly, she believes me when I say I'm AuDHD.

I wish I had been diagnosed sooner. I wish I had found her sooner... But this is why I create the content that I do. My hope is that people can get early diagnosis and support. It really does make all the difference.

Research indicates that neuroaffirming therapy can have significant benefits for those diagnosed with conditions like autism and ADHD. It's essential for therapists to recognize and respect the unique cognitive styles and emotional needs of neurodivergent clients. This understanding is crucial, as it fosters a therapeutic environment where clients feel validated and understood. A double-blind study published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders highlighted that patients with autism who connect with therapists familiar with neurodivergent challenges report higher satisfaction and better treatment outcomes. Moreover, effective communication and shared experiences between therapists and clients play a pivotal role in recovery. Therapists trained in neurodivergence can tailor strategies that align with the client's thought processes, encouraging personal growth and coping mechanisms. The benefits of neuroaffirming therapy extend beyond treatment; they encompass the client’s sense of belonging and acceptance within the therapeutic space. Finding the right support is not just about symptom management but also about fostering a deeper understanding of oneself and one's needs in a world that often overlooks individual differences. If you are on a journey of self-discovery and mental health, seek professionals who specialize in neuroaffirming practices. The right therapist can make all the difference in your mental health journey, helping you navigate challenges and celebrate your unique perspectives.
