Things that prevented me from starting meds

I suspected I was ADHD for about 4 years before getting diagnosed and starting medication. I thought that I could handle it on my own.

For me personally, I quickly learned that hanging on by a thread was not "managing" anything by a long shot, so I had my evaluation and began taking meds. I was worried that by doing this, I was giving up. I was worried I would lose my spark. I was worried for no reason, because the things I was worried about, weren't even true.

These myths are not only harmful, but prevent people from getting the care that they need sooner. What ADHD myths have you heard before?

... Read moreADHD is often surrounded by misunderstandings that prevent individuals from seeking the help they need. Many believe that starting medication means admitting defeat or losing their essence. However, these beliefs are often unfounded. Medications like stimulants and non-stimulants can significantly improve focus, reduce impulsivity, and ultimately enhance quality of life. Challenges commonly faced include fear of side effects or stigma from peers. It's essential to recognize these fears as part of the broader conversation about mental health, which still struggles with societal misconceptions. By addressing these myths and openly discussing ADHD treatments, we can foster a supportive community that encourages individuals to seek the help they deserve. The ADHD community is rich with resources and support networks. Online forums and support groups provide insights and shared experiences that demystify treatment options. Whether through therapy, medication, or lifestyle adjustments, effective management strategies are available. It's time to challenge the myths and advocate for better understanding and acceptance of ADHD treatments, empowering those affected to pursue their paths with confidence.

Yes! Starting meds made the 10+ years of therapy and coping skills ACTUALLY WORK! I finally found the missing piece to living instead of constantly bouncing from survival to burnout.
