Making a sensory-friendly AuDHD home
I lived with the big light, no plushies, and crappy headphones for FAR too long to let any other girls suffer the same fate. As an autistic ADHDer, I now understand the importance of excellent noise canceling headphones, using small, soft light sources, and buying as many squishmallows as one bed can hold. My brain needs the perfect combo of sensory input to really be happy, and these things help!
I need to hear from all of my sensory-sensitive besties in the comments: What do you do to make your home the perfect neuroaffirming environment for you to thrive in?

Creating a sensory-friendly environment is essential for those with Autism and ADHD, often referred to as AuDHD. It's important to recognize that a supportive home can significantly enhance well-being. One key aspect is to avoid harsh lighting; instead, consider soft, adjustable light sources to create an inviting atmosphere. Incorporating noise-canceling headphones helps manage auditory sensitivities and allows for better emotional regulation. Additionally, soft textures and comforting items like plushies can provide sensory relief and a sense of safety. To further enhance your space, consider introducing calming colors and minimalist décor to reduce distractions. Certain strategies can make a big impact. It’s helpful to involve your family in the process of creating a neurodivergent-friendly home; get their input on what feels best. Utilizing sensory tools, such as weighted blankets, can also add a layer of comfort. Lastly, fostering open communication about sensory needs ensures that everyone feels respected and understood in their living environment. What other modifications have you found helpful for creating a supportive home?
