Friendship struggles as an ADHDer

I have struggled to maintain friendships for as long as I can remember. I feel fortunate now to have a few friends who understand neurodivergent brains. And, I'm glad that I have developed some strategies to remind myself to check in with my friends as well.

I often get caught up in my own world, forgetting important things like birthdays. This has caused friction in the past. Additionally, I talk a lot, often forgetting to pause to let my friends give their two cents - I always assume someone will just interrupt me with what they have to say, because that's something I am guilty of.

I now have systems in place to help remember things like special events, hang outs, and just to check in with friends. And overall, I find other ADHD or autistic friendships are often the best ones, because we just understand each other ❤️

... Read moreFriendship can be particularly challenging for those with ADHD due to common traits such as forgetfulness and high impulsivity. Many ADHDer's often find themselves overwhelmed by their thoughts, making it hard to remember important dates like birthdays or regular check-ins with friends. This forgetfulness can lead to feelings of guilt and frustration, as maintaining relationships requires effort and intentionality. However, through shared experiences with fellow neurodivergent individuals, such as those who are also ADHD or autistic, deeper understanding and stronger bonds can form. Setting reminders for important events and utilizing communication tools can significantly help ADHDers manage their relationships better. Additionally, learning to pause in conversations allows room for friends to share their experiences too. Engaging in conversations about ADHD can also foster a supportive environment. Overall, the journey of navigating friendships while having ADHD is complex, but sharing and implementing effective strategies can lead to thriving, fulfilling connections with others who truly understand.
