Healing as an autistic ADHDer

Prior to my diagnoses, I felt overall like an unhealed person. Aside from the trauma I experienced throughout my life, I just generally felt a bit out of place.

Looking back, it’s likely because I didn’t know I was autistic or ADHD. And because of this, I didn’t have the accommodations in place that I needed. My talk therapist never seemed to work, I didn’t actively engage in my special interests as much as I would have liked because some were considered childish, and I was constantly on the go with social obligations.

Am I a fully healed person now? Of course not. But I do implement a lot of systems to make sure I don’t feel like I ever did prior to being diagnosed.

What would you add to this list?

... Read moreHealing and self-discovery for neurodivergent individuals are critical topics in today's mental health discourse. Just like the author, many people realize the importance of accommodations once they understand their unique neurological differences. Engaging in special interests, often seen as childish, is a powerful tool for healing and self-acceptance. The right therapist, ideally a neuroaffirming one, can make a significant impact on this journey. Remember, healing is a process not a destination; it's okay to be a work in progress. Activities that recharge your mind and body—like mindfulness, art, or even quiet time—play a crucial role. When feeling overwhelmed or lost, seeking community and shared experiences can enhance resilience. Embrace the concept that knowing yourself is the first step toward true healing.

Tbh I would add “get engaged politically” because ableism is a systemic issue and we can all work toward unlearning it!
