Making your home a neurodivergent safe space
As an autistic ADHDer, it’s vital that my space is set up to help my brain decompress.
I am a renter, and because of this, my house isn’t set up exactly the way I want it to be. The light fixtures are all too bright and the windows are in all the wrong places to let the natural light in, so I’m stuck with using the big light - my autistic sensory nightmare! Since I can’t fix any of this, I have to make my space comfortable in other ways.
For me, ensuring cozy comfort is available all around me is crucial. This means having blankets, Squishmallows, and my noise canceling headphones in the same place so I don’t lose them. And bonus: our doorbell is disconnected so I don’t get random dings from solicitors on the daily. Any other autistic people hate random visitors? 😭

To create a truly neurodivergent-friendly home, consider adjusting your environment in several ways. Start by evaluating lighting; harsh or bright lights can be overwhelming for neurodivergent individuals. Explore softer alternative lighting options, such as lamps with warm bulbs or even LED strips that offer customizable hues. Next, focus on sound management. Noise can be a significant stressor; thus, equipping your home with noise-canceling headphones or calming sound machines may provide significant relief. Having a quiet room or designated quiet zones can also foster comfort and security. Safety and comfort elements, such as tactile-friendly materials and cozy textiles, play a crucial role. Incorporating weighted blankets or familiar soft toys like Squishmallows can help individuals feel grounded and safe in their environment. Lastly, establishing clear boundaries with visitors can further enhance comfort. Disabling doorbells or using a sign for unexpected guests can alleviate anxiety associated with unanticipated interactions. Creating a well-thought-out sanctuary tailored to your specific needs will ultimately facilitate relaxation, make daily activities easier, and promote mental health.
