Getting started doing the thing with ADHD

Task paralysis is one of my biggest struggles with ADHD. It sometimes feels impossible to just start.

To be totally honest, sometimes it is impossible for my brain to do it. But using a dopamine menu or just trying 5 minutes can pick me up enough to at least do some of the things I needed to get done.

What’s your biggest ADHD struggle?

2024/11/11 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so the 'dopamine menu' hack? It's been a game-changer for me when I'm battling task paralysis. It’s not just about doing anything fun; it’s about having a list of small, low-effort activities that give you a quick hit of dopamine, enough to kickstart your brain. Think of it as a warm-up for your focus muscles. Mine includes things like listening to one favorite song, watching a funny 2-minute cat video, tidying one small corner of my desk, or even just stretching for a minute. The key is that it's readily accessible and guaranteed to provide a positive feeling. It helps me overcome that immediate inertia, especially when my executive function feels completely offline. Then there’s the classic 'just 5 minutes' strategy. This one sounds simple, but it's incredibly powerful. When a task feels monumental, I tell myself, 'I only have to try just 5 minutes.' If after those 5 minutes I'm still feeling completely overwhelmed or resistant, I can stop with zero guilt. More often than not, though, those 5 minutes build enough momentum to keep me going for longer. Sometimes, it’s not even about finishing the task, but just making a dent. That initial commitment is the hardest part, and this trick makes it feel less intimidating. It's truly a secret weapon against the 'all-or-nothing' mindset that ADHD can sometimes impose. Another thing that's part of my personal ADHD 'starter pack' for getting things done is breaking down tasks. Instead of thinking 'clean the house,' I'll write 'put away 5 items in the living room,' 'wipe down the kitchen counter,' or 'load the dishwasher.' Each tiny step feels achievable, and ticking them off provides mini-dopamine hits, making the whole process less daunting. Sometimes, even with all my tricks, I just can't start. That's where body doubling comes in. Having someone else, even virtually, present while I work on a task can be incredibly motivating. It creates a gentle sense of accountability and makes solo tasks feel less isolating. It’s like having an invisible cheerleader. It doesn't have to be a friend; sometimes I'll just put on a 'study with me' YouTube video. My brain thrives on visual cues. If something needs doing, it needs to be visible. 'Out of sight, out of mind' is a real ADHD challenge! So, I use sticky notes for urgent reminders, whiteboards for bigger projects, and transparent storage bins so I can actually see what's inside. A clean, organized workspace, even if it's just my immediate desk area, also drastically reduces overwhelm and makes it easier to focus those first crucial moments. And finally, a crucial part of any ADHD starter pack is self-compassion. There will be days when none of these hacks work, and that's okay. It's not a moral failing; it's how our brains are wired. Instead of beating myself up, I try to acknowledge the struggle, rest, and try again tomorrow. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and learning to be kind to myself is just as important as finding strategies to start.
