3 ways we keep sameness as a traveling ND family

I used to say I prefer traveling to a new place every time, but that’s not always true. When I’m traveling with my spouse and our two kids, I like visiting the same places so we know what to expect. It’s like the autistic wants the same place but ADHD would rather take me somewhere new. So we find balance between the two.

One year, this meant we were annual pass holders at Universal Orlando, and traveled a few times that year to go there. Another, we chose Vancouver BC. This year, we were purchased annual passes for Universal Studios Hollywood, so we will be going there a few times.

Here are some effective strategies: 1. **Stay at Familiar Hotels**: Regularly returning to the same accommodations can provide a sense of security. Familiarity with the environment allows neurodivergent individuals to settle more easily and enjoy their traveling experience without the added stress of adjusting to new surroundings. 2. **Bring Comfort Items from Home**: Packing familiar items, such as favorite toys or blankets, can make a big difference during travel. These comfort items act as emotional anchors and can help individuals cope with the changes in their surroundings. 3. **Visit the Same Destination Multiple Times**: Choosing to explore beloved places, like Universal Studios, not only makes travel exciting but also predictable. Repeating visits enables families to forge deeper connections with the location and each other, creating cherished family traditions. By applying these strategies, families can successfully blend routines with the joy of travel, making every trip fulfilling and enjoyable for everyone involved.
