Who doesn’t love a good travel tip?!

Turks & Caicos!! We’ve been visiting 2-3 times a year for 7 years. I’m going to share a few tips.

1.Stay on Grace Bay beach. It’s the largest beach. It’s the main area for shopping and restaurants. Now there are restaurants all over that are amazing, explore those too!

2. Rent a car, it’s a must! Roads are easy to navigate with roundabouts and the speed limits are low.

3. The fancy resorts share the same beach as the modest mid ranch resorts. Stay in the mid range. They will also have the water sports. The chair situation is usually better on the beach as well, not so crowded.

4. Pack a cooler tumbler and make your own cocktails. The grocery stores carry everything you need. I think there are more alcohol options than food options if I’m being honest. Yes the groceries cost more due to importing. But the alcohol is fairly priced.

5. Dine out! There are fancy upscale places as well as small local restaurants. You’ll find the most amazing morning coffee and pastries, oatmeal, fruit platters, eggs etc. The lunch possibilities are endless. Lots of fish tacos, fried fish, conch, hamburgers, pizza and salads. Dinner, some of the finest dining you’ll ever have. So many seafood options. There is lobster, steak, roasted chicken. For a modest budget there is still a lot of seafood options, pizza and Mexican food. Make reservations for dinner!

6. Tip in cash directly to the servers and waitstaff and anyone who assists you. You can use US dollars, it’s their primary currency. Many restaurants charge a service fee that is shared amongst everyone in the establishment. So tip in cash so it goes directly to whoever assisted you in addition to the service fee. It is typically about 12%.

7. Patience in the airport, it gets crowded. Head upstairs and have a cocktail!!

8. Go in the off season. We visit in May and late October to early November. The water is warmer and calmer than peak season which is typically Late November to mid April. Prices are less at the resorts, restaurants are easier to get in to.

9. Go on group charters! Fraction of the price as private ( they are costly ). Same water and experience and your fellow travelers are usually a blast to spend a few hours with.

10. Enjoy the most beautiful clear water you’ll ever encounter. Meet the most lovely friendly locals. Have fun!!

... Read moreHaving visited Turks & Caicos multiple times, I've found that beyond the well-known Grace Bay beach and great dining spots, immersing yourself in the local culture truly elevates the experience. For instance, trying out local events and festivals gives you a richer understanding of the friendly island vibe. When renting a car, consider choosing a hybrid or smaller vehicle since fuel can be pricier on the islands. Packing smart is also key: besides your cooler tumbler for cocktails, bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect yourself and the vibrant marine life you'll encounter during snorkeling trips. Speaking of snorkeling, besides the popular spots, don't hesitate to ask locals about lesser-known reefs where the underwater visibility and sea creatures are equally incredible but less crowded. For dining, I recommend branching out to family-run eateries that offer authentic conch salad and fresh seafood dishes prepared with island flair at reasonable prices. Booking dinners in advance ensures access to spots that fill up quickly, especially for exquisite seafood options. Regarding group charters, they’re a fantastic way to meet travelers while keeping costs low. I once joined a snorkeling charter where we explored the stunning underwater world and even spotted turtles—what an unforgettable experience! Lastly, patience really is a virtue, especially at the airport. Taking time to relax with a cocktail upstairs helps you unwind after your trip or before departure. Visiting in the off-season like May or late October not only means fewer crowds but also warmer, calmer waters which were perfect for my kayaking and paddleboarding adventures. Overall, Turks & Caicos offers a balance of relaxation, adventure, and cultural richness that every traveler should experience. Planning with these insights ensures you enjoy one of the most beautiful beach destinations with ease and authentic local charm.
