#onthisday PLEASE do not rate your skills on your resume!!!! Waste of space that you can use for keywords instead
From my personal experience revising resumes and applying for various positions, I've noticed the widespread but misguided trend of rating skills directly on resumes. While it might seem like an attempt to quantify one's abilities, rating yourself with stars or bars can actually detract from your professional image. Recruiters and applicant tracking systems (ATS) are more focused on relevant keywords and concrete examples of your abilities rather than subjective ratings. Instead of spending valuable resume space on skill ratings, I recommend focusing on clearly describing your experiences and accomplishments that demonstrate those skills. For instance, if your communication skills are strong, mention specific situations where you led presentations or successfully resolved conflicts. This narrative approach is far more compelling than a 3 out of 5 star rating. Additionally, including skill ratings can raise unnecessary questions. Why rate yourself a 3 out of 5 stars instead of a 5? It may imply a lack of confidence or hesitation, which you want to avoid. If you choose to use any form of rating, it's better to omit it altogether or be consistent and confident in showcasing your expertise through examples, certifications, or endorsements. Another tip from my experience is to align your skills section with keywords from the job description. ATS scans resumes for keywords, so including industry-specific terms and skills helps ensure your resume gets noticed. For example, if applying to a project management role, explicitly listing skills like "Agile methodology," "stakeholder communication," or "budget management" is much more effective than a generic skill rating. Ultimately, your resume is your first impression – make it concise, relevant, and impactful by showcasing your skills through evidence and keywords rather than subjective ratings.
