Our Christian Unity
Romans 12:4, 5, 9, 10. Paul compares anointed Christians to members of a body serving unitedly under their Head, Christ. (Col. 1:18) He reminds spirit-begotten Christians that a body has many members with different functions and that they, “although many, are one body in union with Christ.” In a similar vein, Paul exhorted anointed Christians in Ephesus: “Let us by love grow up in all things into him who is the head, Christ. From him all the body, by being harmoniously joined together and being made to cooperate through every joint that gives what is needed, according to the functioning of each respective member in due measure, makes for the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.”—Eph. 4:15, 16.
Although the “other sheep” are not part of the composite body of Christ, they can learn much from this illustration. (John 10:16) Paul states that Jehovah “subjected all things under [Christ’s] feet, and made him head over all things to the congregation.” (Eph. 1:22) Today, the other sheep are part of “all things” placed by Jehovah under the headship of his Son. They are also among the “belongings” that Christ has entrusted to his “faithful and discreet slave.” (Matt. 24:45-47) Those with an earthly hope should, therefore, recognize Christ as their Head and be submissive to the faithful and discreet slave and its Governing Body and to the men appointed as overseers in the congregation. (Heb. 13:7, 17) This contributes to Christian unity.
The concept of Christian unity as depicted in the Scriptures emphasizes the importance of each believer playing a unique role within the larger body of Christ. Drawing from Romans 12 and Ephesians 4, it's clear that unity isn't about uniformity but about harmonious cooperation. Each member contributes differently, just as parts of the human body have distinct functions yet work together seamlessly. In my own experience within a local congregation, I've seen how recognizing Christ as the head inspires humility and service. When we understand that Jesus leads the congregation and that overseers are appointed to guide us, it becomes easier to nurture respect and submission which are vital for maintaining unity. This was particularly evident during community outreach activities where diverse skills and gifts were essential to reach our goals. Also, the distinction between anointed Christians and the 'other sheep' teaches us about the inclusiveness of God’s people. While the anointed have a heavenly hope and specific roles, the other sheep with an earthly hope also contribute to the growth of God’s kingdom by learning from the example of unity and obedience to Christ's headship and the Governing Body. This layered structure helps prevent division and fosters mutual support. Prayer plays a crucial role in strengthening this unity. Such personal dedication nurtures the collective strength of the body. Overall, Christian unity is a dynamic, ongoing process. It requires each member to act with love, humility, and cooperation under Christ’s leadership. Embracing this role enriches our spiritual lives and helps us collectively build a vibrant and loving community.
