... Read moreOkay, so let's get into it – everyone has that one food (or many!) that just makes them go 'ick!' For me, personally, it's anything with a slimy texture. Think okra, or overly soft, stewed mushrooms. Just the thought sends shivers down my spine! It's not about the taste necessarily, but that textural element is a complete deal-breaker. I remember once trying a supposedly gourmet dish that had sea urchin, and while it's a delicacy for some, the moment it hit my tongue, I knew it was my ultimate food ick. It was like a weird, briny, gelatinous blob, and I just couldn't get past it.
It's fascinating how diverse food icks can be. Some people can't stand cilantro because it tastes like soap to them – a genetic predisposition, apparently! Others recoil at the smell of certain cheeses, no matter how much their friends rave about them. I've heard people say they can't handle the squeaky texture of halloumi, or the way certain vegetables, like bell peppers, repeat on them for hours. It really makes you wonder, what makes a food an 'ick' for one person but a delicacy for another?
I think a lot of it comes down to early experiences or even just sensory preferences. Our brains are wired to protect us, and sometimes a bad experience with a food (or even just an unpleasant texture or smell) can create a lasting aversion. It's not always rational, but it's very real! And let's be honest, trying to force yourself to eat something you genuinely dislike can ruin an entire meal.
On Lemon8, I’ve seen so many people bravely confessing their own 'food icks', and it’s always so validating to know you're not alone. It makes me feel like we're all part of this big culinary confession booth! From the way someone else chews, to a specific smell, or even the appearance of food (like veins in meat – nope!), the list of things that can trigger an 'ick' is endless. The image on the post asking 'What is your biggest food ick?' really hits home for me.
So, after hearing about my slimy texture issues and my sea urchin trauma, I'm genuinely curious: what's your biggest food ick? Is it a specific food, a texture, a smell, or maybe even a weird eating habit that just grinds your gears? Don't be shy – let's spill the beans (unless beans are your food ick, then maybe don't spill them!). Sharing these things makes us realize how unique our palates are, and it's all part of the fun of exploring food culture together. What's the one thing you absolutely, positively cannot stand to eat?
ew lordy be.. I would have to say my biggest food ick is Hominy. I remember someone making me try it over and over and it was gross.. I have hated it ever since.
probably eggs, I can eat them if I try not to think to hard but if I get one wrong smell I'm DONE
