I wanted to share a little more about the process behind these recent pieces for Ale's campaign, especially that gnarly creature that seems to be catching a lot of attention! Creating art for our Dungeons & Dragons adventures is one of my favorite things, and sometimes, you just have to dive into the darker side of fantasy. When I was sketching out that emaciated, canine-like creature – the one with the exposed ribs and rotting organs – I really aimed for something truly unsettling. Our DM wanted a monster that wasn't just tough, but deeply disturbing, a creature of pure, insatiable hunger. I spent a lot of time thinking about how to convey that visually: the wide-split mouth, the constantly drooling jaws, the sharp teeth, and that chilling detail of it eating its own lips because it's never satisfied. It's not just about gore; it's about making players feel a primal fear, imagining something that's literally consuming itself out of desperation. For DMs looking to add a truly disturbing element to their game, focusing on visceral details and the creature's lore (like perpetual hunger) can make a huge impact beyond just combat stats. Designing original characters, even side NPCs, to be as memorable as popular fanart characters like "Kogito" or a "Pursuer" from other fantasy worlds, is a challenge I love. Take the stern male character I drew, who we call 'Father' in the campaign – I wanted him to exude authority and a bit of mystery. His crossed arms and dark sunglasses, combined with those pointed ears, create a specific vibe. Similarly, the distressed horned character was all about conveying raw emotion and a troubled past. It's about giving them visual cues that tell a story, even before the players interact with them. When I'm working on artwork for these characters, I try to think: 'What's their defining trait? What emotion do I want them to evoke?' This helps make them feel real and impactful, just like iconic characters from popular media. Thinking about fanart, I believe the best original character art can evoke that same passion. Whether it's a terrifying beast that leaves a lasting impression, or a nuanced NPC that players grow attached to, the goal is to create something that sparks imagination and conversation. I always look for ways to push my digital art skills to truly capture the essence of these D&D moments. From the intricate thorns in the background for the distressed character to the detailed textures on the monster, every element plays a part in building our campaign's unique world.
