Dalio: allocate 15% of your portfolio in BTC

According to Coindesk, associate founder of Bridgewater Ray Dalio calls for investors to allocate 15% of their portfolio in BTC or gold, to hedge against risks resulted from the accelerating US debt burden and the weakening US dollar, when he was on the Master Investor podcast on Sunday. Only in 2022, he recommended an allocation of 2% in BTC.

... Read moreRay Dalio’s updated recommendation to allocate 15% of investment portfolios to Bitcoin (BTC) or gold reflects a growing concern over the escalating US national debt and a weakening US dollar. This shift highlights an increased awareness of potential risks tied to fiscal instability and currency devaluation. Bitcoin and gold are viewed as alternative assets that can provide a hedge during inflationary pressures and economic uncertainty. Dalio’s earlier stance in 2022 suggested a much smaller share — around 1-2% in Bitcoin — illustrating his cautious approach towards cryptocurrency as part of a diversified portfolio. However, the recognition of a “debt spiral” or “debt doom loop” in the US economy underscores why greater exposure to these safe-haven assets is now advocated. Investors should note that both Bitcoin and gold share qualities that act as stores of value. Gold has a long-established history as a hedge against inflation and currency risk, while Bitcoin, often dubbed “digital gold,” offers decentralized, limited supply features that can protect buying power against monetary policy missteps. The call for a 15% allocation serves as a strategic buffer in uncertain economic times, especially considering ongoing global financial challenges and policy responses. This advice aligns with the idea that portfolios need to adapt dynamically to macroeconomic risks by including assets less correlated with traditional equity or bond markets. For investors considering this approach, it is important to assess their risk tolerance, investment horizon, and portfolio diversification goals. Bitcoin’s volatility and regulatory environment differ from gold’s, so understanding these nuances is critical for effective asset allocation. Overall, Dalio’s insight encourages broader consideration of alternative assets in portfolio construction to safeguard wealth amidst growing economic headwinds.
