If you're thinking about getting rats, please consider getting at least two, as they need companionship to be happy and well-adjusted. My rats love to cuddle with each other, and they've also formed such strong bonds with me. They often 'groom' my hair or hands, which is their way of showing affection. It's truly heartwarming! Contrary to popular belief, pet rats are actually very clean animals. They spend a significant amount of time grooming themselves, much like cats. They don't typically carry diseases like their wild counterparts, especially when sourced from reputable breeders. With a clean cage and regular interaction, they are wonderfully hygienic pets. I’ve even managed to litter train mine in their cage, which makes cleaning much easier! Their diet is also something I've learned a lot about. While they can eat a variety of things, a good quality rat-specific lab block should make up the bulk of their diet. Supplementing with fresh fruits, vegetables, and occasional protein sources keeps them healthy and happy. Just remember to research what's safe and what's not – no avocado pits or citrus peel for these little ones! Housing is key for pet rats. They need a spacious cage with plenty of levels, hammocks, tubes, and toys to keep them entertained. Enrichment is crucial for their mental stimulation. I love setting up new layouts in their cage and watching them explore. A large cage size is a must, as they are active and need space to climb and play. While their lifespan is relatively short, typically 2-3 years, they pack so much joy and personality into that time. Each rat has its own distinct character, and getting to know them has been such a rewarding experience. Don't let the short lifespan deter you; the love and laughter they bring are immeasurable.
