trying to have a “do nothing” day… somehow still did everything 🤦♀️ toxic productivity is a thing
I've often found it hard to simply relax without feeling guilty. Toxic productivity is a real issue in our culture today, where even having a day off can trigger a sense of needing to constantly be doing something. From my own experience, I realized that rest isn’t about being idle or ‘doing nothing’ in a strict sense—it’s about allowing yourself space to recharge, whether that involves small productive acts like light chores or spontaneous plans that bring joy. For instance, on one of my recent ‘do nothing’ days, despite aiming to unwind, I started with some morning movement and tidying up, which helped set a gentle tone for the day. Meeting up for breakfast at a new local cafe added a refreshing social connection that felt restful in its own way. Throughout the day, simple actions like washing makeup brushes and swimming made me feel accomplished without the pressure of traditional productivity. A pivotal moment was deciding to watch a movie spontaneously, which, combined with comfort food like popcorn and ice cream, gave me small but significant moments of pleasure. Watching sports later, despite usually being busy, was a way to enjoy the day's unfolding rather than control it. Reflecting on this, I've come to see rest as something we deserve for its own sake—not something we have to earn through busyness or accomplishment. It’s a reminder that relaxation and productivity can coexist healthily, where rest becomes a vital, enriching part of life rather than a source of stress. If you find it hard to switch off, try embracing small, enjoyable activities that feel good rather than forcing yourself into strict inactivity. Rest might just be the most productive thing you do for your well-being.
