I’ve been on the hunt for the best non-toxic household cleaners for the past year, these are some of my favorite to use for the bathroom:
• BON AMI Powder Cleanser - works great for cleaning the countertops, sink, and shower!
• Auntie Fannie’s Glass & Window Cleaning Vinegar Spray - love this product for mirrors and you can use it if you have a glass shower!
• ATTITUDE All Purpose Cleaner - after I’ve used the BON AMI Powder Cleanser on my countertops I like to use this for a final wipe down. it’s also great for cleaning the surfaces of your toilet!
• Seventh Generation Toilet Bowl Cleaner - while this isn’t my number one option, it is a better alternative to most toilet bowl cleaners with harsh fumes. I think I’ll try the Molly Suds Toilet Bowl Cleaner once I’ve finished this container!
... Read moreBuilding on my journey to a truly non-toxic bathroom, I've discovered even more ways to keep things sparkling and serene without harsh chemicals. Beyond the fantastic products I've already shared, there are some incredible natural ingredients and specific techniques that can elevate your cleaning routine, addressing those tricky areas and delivering that peaceful, aesthetic vibe we all crave.
One powerful natural cleaner that often gets overlooked is citric acid powder. If you're battling stubborn hard water stains, limescale, or even rust marks in your bathroom, citric acid is a game-changer. It's a natural descaler and a fantastic alternative to harsh chemical cleaners. For your toilet bowl, simply sprinkle about a quarter cup of citric acid powder into the bowl, let it sit for a few hours or even overnight, then give it a scrub and flush. You'll be amazed at how easily stains disappear! For shower heads or faucets with mineral buildup, dissolve 1-2 tablespoons of citric acid powder in a cup of warm water, then soak the affected parts (or wrap a cloth soaked in the solution around them) for an hour before scrubbing clean. It's also brilliant for refreshing grout – make a paste with a little water, apply, let it sit, and scrub. This versatile powder truly helps achieve a deeper clean, tackling issues that sometimes even specialized non-toxic cleaners struggle with, and it leaves no harsh chemical residue or smell, contributing to that desired 'peaceful smelling' environment.
You might recall I mentioned trying Molly Suds Toilet Bowl Cleaner next. While I'm excited about that, I've also been exploring natural options for a sink scrub that truly delivers. Many non-toxic enthusiasts, myself included, often turn to simple DIY solutions. A mixture of baking soda with a few drops of essential oil (like lemon for freshness or tea tree for its antimicrobial properties) makes for an excellent, scratch-free scrub for your sink and countertops. For those really tough spots, pairing a gentle powder cleanser, like the Bon Ami Powder I love (which is celebrated for being 'scratch-free' and made with 'simple ingredients'), with a bit of liquid castile soap can create an incredibly effective and safe paste. This approach embodies the 'minimalist' cleaning philosophy while ensuring your surfaces remain beautiful and intact.
Achieving a minimalist, aesthetic, and peaceful bathroom goes beyond just the cleaners themselves; it's also about how you incorporate them into your space. For a serene look, consider decanting your favorite non-toxic cleaners into uniform, refillable bottles – think amber glass spray bottles or sleek ceramic soap dispensers. This instantly elevates your 'nice looking counter' aesthetic. When selecting products, actively seek out those with subtle, natural scents (like the 'citrus zest' of the ATTITUDE All Purpose Cleaner) or unscented options, avoiding anything with strong, artificial fragrances that can detract from a 'peaceful smelling' atmosphere. Prioritize brands that highlight being 'chlorine-free', 'dye-free', 'hypoallergenic', 'EWG A-rated', 'vegan', and 'cruelty-free' – keywords often found on the labels of high-quality, non-toxic products that ensure a truly non-harsh and healthy home.
Finally, regarding Bon Ami, while I adore its powder form, its versatility allows for creative uses. If you're looking for a 'Bon Ami spray' alternative, you can easily create a dilute solution for lighter cleaning tasks or a thicker paste for more intensive scrubbing. Its 'chlorine-free' and 'dye-free' nature makes it a safe and reliable choice for various surfaces, preventing discoloration and safeguarding your family from unnecessary chemical exposures. By making conscious choices about your cleaning products and methods, you're not just cleaning your bathroom; you're cultivating a healthier, more harmonious living space.
TYSM GIRL I knew Seventh Generation wasn't the best, but Molly's Suds is so expensive. I just need something I can wear with a mask and gloves and know it's not going to kill me or my family lol.
