Places to travel: Bonaire

Having visited Bonaire myself, I can say it’s truly a hidden gem in the Caribbean. One of the highlights was definitely seeing the salt flats—the mountains of salt create a surreal landscape, and the water’s pink hue is simply mesmerizing. What fascinated me most was the island’s dedication to preserving its natural beauty and wildlife. For example, flamingos roam protected areas freely, and you must be careful not to take any rocks or shells home, or you could face hefty fines. Touring the island by ATV was an unforgettable experience. It only takes about a gallon of gas to drive around the whole island four times, which makes it super eco-friendly as well. Riding along the rocky shoreline gave me spectacular views and a sense of adventure I hadn’t expected from such a small island. Plus, the historic ruins scattered around offered a glimpse into Bonaire’s past that kept every stop interesting. One unexpected delight was tasting the passionfruit smoothie at a local beach resort—made by students from the Netherlands, it was hands down the best I’ve ever had. The blend of beautiful beaches, wildlife, history, and local culture makes Bonaire a uniquely enriching destination that suits explorers, history buffs, and beach lovers alike. I’d rate my trip a solid 9/10 and highly recommend adding Bonaire to your travel list.
