My Hair Is a Crown — But Human Connection Changed
My hair is a crown.
But it’s not my only one.
Human connection is too.
As a Black woman traveling the world, when people from different cultures show genuine curiosity about my hair, I lead with discernment instead of defensiveness. Curiosity instead of fear.
What starts as questions about hair often becomes conversation.
Conversation becomes cultural exchange.
Exchange becomes connection, friendship, and sometimes opportunity.
That’s cultural intelligence — not weakness.
Black identity does not require hardness to be valid.
Protection doesn’t always mean walls.
And strength doesn’t always look like refusal.
Travel taught me this: your humanity opens doors that anger never will.
Wisdom is knowing when to guard yourself — and when connection does the work.
